Shared Future Upsets Heavily Favored Big Switch To Take $72,000 Santa Anita Allowance Feature
SHARED FUTURE UPSETS HEAVILY FAVORED BIG SWITCH TO TAKE $72,000 SANTA ANITA ALLOWANCE FEATURE BY A HALF LENGTH
ARCADIA, Calif. (Jan. 20, 2023)—Attentive to the pace while saving ground to the far turn, trainer Steve Knapp’s Shared Future benefitted from a recent outing and overtook heavily favored Big Switch late to take Friday’s $72,000 allowance feature by a half length. Ridden by Tiago Pereira, Shared Future got a flat mile in 1:37.30.
With Big Switch showing the way, Shared Future saved ground at the rail to the far turn, where she angled outside the favorite and the twosome went head and head from quarter pole through the lane with Shared Future inching clear at the wire.
“I think this was her best effort, because she did win, but last time (when second going a mile at the same level at Los Alamitos on Dec. 18) she got knocked around leaving the gate and it cost her any chance,” said Knapp. “Today, when the favorite didn’t get away from us at the three eighths pole, I thought we had a big chance.
“She’s bred pretty nicely. This is a step up, we’ve been looking for a mile for quite a while…We’ll find out soon (how good she is).”
Twice second since claimed five starts back for $40,000 on Aug. 4 at Del Mar, Shared Future was off at 8-1 in a field of six older fillies and mares and paid $18.20, $4.20 and $2.80.
Owned by Les Blake, Shared Future, a 4-year-old Kentucky-bred filly by Twirling Candy out of the Distorted Humor mare Sharaat, is now 17-4-3-1. With the winner’s share of $43,200, she increased her earnings to $189,220.
Long striding Big Switch, idle since an impressive winner going a mile and one sixteenth versus California-breds here on May 28, was off at 3-5 with Juan Hernandez up and paid $2.20 and $2.10 while finishing 3 ¼ lengths in front of Trouville.
Ridden by apprentice Armando Aguilar, Trouville finished 5 ½ lengths clear of Micro Share and paid $3.20 while off at 7-1.
Fractions on the race were 22.91, 47.25, 1:11.40 and 1:24.40.
Friday’s allowance feature was run as the second on a nine-race card.
Racing resumes with special early first post time for a 10-race program on Saturday at 12 noon.
