- $10.5 MILLION FLIGHTLINE COLT ARRIVES AT SANTA ANITA - MULLINS: INTREPIDO HEADED TO KENTUCKY AFTER SHARP WORK - WORKS: PAVLOVIAN, BRANT, FORMIDABLE MAN AMONG NOTABLES - VIDEO WORKOUTS AVAILABLE OF KY. DERBY HOPEFULS AT 1/ST TV
$10.5 MILLION FLIGHTLINE COLT ARRIVES AT SANTA ANITA The Flightline colt who sold for an eye-popping $10.5 million Friday at the OBS spring sale of 2-year-olds in training in Florida arrived at trainer Bob Baffert’s barn at Santa Anita Park Saturday night shortly before 9 p.m.
“He’s a specimen,” Baffert said Sunday morning. “A man among boys really. And with his pedigree, you know why he cost so much.”
Bloodstock agent Donato Lanni signed the sales ticket for the colt on behalf of owner Zedan Racing, whose principal is Amr Zedan. The purchase price shattered the all-time Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co. record of $3 million, which Zedan paid for Grade I winner Brant at the 2025 OBS March 2-year-old sale. It is also the second-highest price ever paid for a 2-year-old in North America. In 2006, The Green Monkey commanded $16 million at the Fasig-Tipton Florida select sale.
Baffert said the colt handled the cross-country trip to Santa Anita so well he’ll likely go the track Monday morning for light exercise.
“He’s a handful. He’s jumping out of his skin,” Baffert said.
The bay colt is from the first crop of Flightline, the brilliant 2022 Horse of the Year who was retired a perfect 6-for-6 with four Grade I wins including the 2022 Breeders’ Cup Classic. His dam is Lucrezia, a daughter of perennial top stallion Into Mischief, who was a two-time stakes winner and Grade II-placed.
The colt was bred in Kentucky by Edward Seltzer, Beverly Seltzer and W.S. Farish. He first sold at auction as a weanling for $575,000 at the 2024 Keeneland November breeding stock sale. Hartley/DeRenzo Thoroughbreds consigned the colt to the OBS sale. At the under-tack show for the OBS sale, the colt wowed onlookers when blazing a furlong in 9 3/5 seconds.
During his racing career, Flightline was trained by John Sadler and based at Santa Anita. He now stands at Lane’s End Farm in central Kentucky where he commands stud fee of $125,000.
MULLINS: INTREPIDO HEADED TO KENTUCKY AFTER SHARP WORK Grade I winner Intrepido, who was fourth in the GI Santa Anita Derby April 4, returned to the work tab Sunday at Santa Anita. The colt by Maximus Mischief drilled four furlongs in 47.4 seconds, which was quicker than trainer Jeff Mullins had anticipated.
“I didn’t (expect that),” Mullins said. “But we often get what we don’t expect.”
Intrepido is now a candidate to run in the Kentucky Derby on May 2 at Churchill Downs. Following Sunday’s work, Mullins said Intrepido would ship to Churchill Downs with the hopes of competing in the 1 ¼-mile classic.
“That’s the plan,” Mullins said.
As of Sunday morning, Intrepido had not yet officially secured a berth in the Derby, which is limited to 20 starters. According to the official Kentucky Derby leaderboard provided by Churchill Downs on Saturday, Intrepido ranked No. 22.
Asked if Intrepido would run in a different race at Churchill Downs if he didn’t make the Derby, Mullins replied, “No.”
Stablemate Queen Maxima is also headed to Churchill Downs, Mullins added. Last year, Queen Maxima won the GIII Unbridled Sidney at Churchill Downs on the Kentucky Oaks undercard the day prior to the Derby.
Intrepido is owned by Dutch Girl Holdings and Irving Ventures. A $385,000 auction purchase last year, Intrepido as a 2-year-old won the GI American Pharoah at Santa Anita and was fifth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile after a slow start. Prior to the Santa Anita Derby, Intrepido finished second in the GIII Robert B. Lewis at Santa Anita in his 3-year-old debut.
WORKS: PAVLOVIAN, BRANT, FORMIDABLE MAN AMONG NOTABLES Expected Kentucky Derby starter Pavlovian and Grade I winners Brant and Formidable Man were among the notables on Sunday’s work tab at Santa Anita.
Pavlovian, trained by Doug O’Neill, worked six furlongs in 1:16.0 A California-bred colt by Pavel, Pavlovian is campaigned by breeder Reddam Racing. In February, he won the Sunland Derby at Sunland Park. He then returned in the GII Louisiana Derby at Fair Grounds on March 21 and finished second, just a head back of winner Emerging Market.
Brant drilled five furlongs in 1:00.0. This was his second work since finishing fifth as the odds-on favorite in the GII San Felipe on March 7 at Santa Anita. Trained by Bob Baffert, Brant last year won the GI Del Mar Futurity and finished third in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile.
Also working for Baffert was Forced Entry, who was pulled up shortly after the start of the GII Santa Anita Oaks on April 4. In her second work since the aborted effort, Forced Entry worked five furlongs from the gate in 1:00.2. Prior to the Santa Anita Oaks, the daughter of Charlatan won the GIII Santa Ysabel at Santa Anita.
Formidable Man, trained by Michael McCarthy, is gearing up for his first start since finishing second in the Breeders’ Cup Mile on Nov. 1 at Del Mar. After having his first work of the year eight days ago, the 6-year-old horse by City of Light returned with a three-furlong work in 37.60 seconds.
Last year, Formidable Man won the GI Frank E. Kilroe Mile, GII Eddie Read, GII Del Mar Mile. In 2024, his wins included the GI Hollywood Derby and GII Del Mar Derby.
