GIII AUTUMN MISS: ML FAVE SOMERSET WEST WILL NOT RUN

Somerset West, the 2-1 morning line favorite in Sunday’s Grade III Autumn Miss, will not run in the one-mile turf event for 3-year-old fillies, trainer John Sadler said Saturday morning.

“We just didn’t think it was the right spot. We didn’t like the post,” Sadler said. Somerset West was drawn to the far outside in post 11. By Kantharos, Somerset West in her last two starts has bagged a pair of Grade II wins, both at big prices. In July at Del Mar, she won the San Clemente going one mile on turf at 35-1. Somerset West then returned to win the GII Music City Stakes at odds of 19-1 going 6 ½ furlongs at Kentucky Downs on Sept. 5.

With the defection of Somerset West, Green Carrera inherits the role of favorite. Imported this summer from Europe, Green Carrera made her U.S. debut for trainer Joseph O’Brien in the GI Del Mar Oaks going 1 1/8 miles on Aug. 22. After breaking slowly, she was last of 10 until the final quarter mile when she rallied under Umberto Rispoli to be fourth, beaten 2 ½ lengths by winner Tam Tam, who earlier this month returned to win the GI Queen Elizabeth at Keeneland.

Following the Del Mar Oaks, Green Carrera was sent to trainer Leonard Powell. During her time in England, the daughter of Lope De Vega won three of seven starts for O’Brien which included a stakes victory at Royal Ascot.

“She came with great credentials having won at Royal Ascot and being stakes-placed in Ireland,” Powell said. “She’s a filly with some upside and I thought she ran to it in the Del Mar Oaks. She was a bit slow out of the gate and a bit further back, but she finished really well.”

Green Carrera has come back to work four times on the Santa Anita main track for Powell.

“Very straightforward,” Powell said of his recent addition. “The first two works were very workmanlike, but the last two have been really nice. She’s acting well and we’re very happy with her.”

Green Carrera is owned by Chivalry Thoroughbred Racing, Farfellow Farms and Rancho Temescal Thoroughbred Partners. She will again have Rispoli in the irons on Sunday.

The Autumn Miss goes as the ninth and final race Sunday. First post is at 1 p.m. PT and the Autumn Miss goes at 5:05 p.m. The field in post position order: La Ville Lumiere, Kazushi Kimura (30-1); Cortina d’Amprezzo, Joel Rosario (8-1); Memorized, Juan Hernandez (6-1); Ramayana, Jamie Spencer (8-1); Brave Deb, Emisael Jaramillo (20-1); Latte Luv, Kyle Frey (30-1); Goodies, Drayden Van Dyke (15-1); Green Carrera, Umberto Rispoli (5-2); People Watching, Katie Davis (30-1); Full Moon Tonight, Hector Berrios (10-1).

WORKS: D’AMATO’S BREEDERS’ CUP RUNNERS LEAD TAB

Breeders’ Cup pre-entrants Iron Man Cal, Thought Process, Sorrento Sky, Majestic Oops and Gold Phoenix all worked for trainer Phil D’Amato Saturday at Santa Anita.

Four of the five are headed to Keeneland to compete in next weekend’s Breeders’ Cup. Not making the trip is Gold Phoenix, D’Amato told Daily Racing Form after pre-entries were announced on Wednesday. Gold Phoenix was pre-entered in the Breeders’ Cup Turf but is relegated to sixth on the also-eligible list.

Iron Man Cal worked five furlongs in 59.8 seconds. It was the second-fastest of 55 works at the distance. A 4-year-old gelding by Collected, Iron Man Cal most recently won the GII Pat O’Brien going seven furlongs on Aug. 29 at Del Mar. He is pre-entered in both the $2 million Sprint going six furlongs and $1 million Dirt Mile. The Sprint is listed as Iron Man Cal’s first preference.

Thought Process worked five furlongs on the main track in 1:00.2. A Grade I winner this year, Thought Process most recently won the GII Rodeo Drive on Oct. 3 at Santa Anita. The 4-year-old filly by Collected is pre-entered in the $2 million Filly & Mare Turf.

Sorrento Sky worked five furlongs on the training track in 1:00.8. Winner of both the GII Green Flash at Del Mar and GII Eddie D at Santa Anita in his two most recent starts, the 5-year-old gelding by Prince of Lir is pre-entered in the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint.

Majestic Oops worked five furlongs on the main track in 1:01.0. A 6-year-old mare by Majestic Harbor, Majestic Oops is pre-entered in the $2 million Filly & Mare Sprint going seven furlongs. She most recently finished second in the GII Zenyatta going 1 1/16 miles on Sept. 27 at Santa Anita.

On Friday, a pair of Breeders’ Cup pre-entrants worked before Santa Anita’s first race. Super Corredora, pre-entered in the $2 million Distaff, worked four furlongs in 47.4 seconds for trainer John Sadler. Sweet Azteca, pre-entered in the Filly & Mare Sprint, worked five furlongs in 1:00 for trainer Richard Baltas.

The early afternoon works came due to rain protocols that led to the main track being closed for workers Friday morning.

Sadler was pleased with Super Corredora’s work and said both she and stablemate Full Serrano, pre-entered in the $1 million Dirt Mile, departed for Keeneland Sunday morning.

“She went beautifully over the track and came out of the work well,” Sadler said. “(Santa Anita) was gracious enough to open up the track for us and Sweet Azteca. She had a nice little work and off she went.”

The fields for all 14 Breeders’ Cup races will be set after final entries close on Monday.
