SANTA ANITA PARK OWNER-TRAINER PARKING LOT REOPENS THIS WEEKAS TRACK COMPLETES MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR WATER RETENTION BASIN

FEDERALLY MANDATED PROJECT BEGAN IN 2022

ARCADIA, CA (Sept. 15, 2025)— Santa Anita Park will welcome back owners and trainers to the parking lot on the southwest side of the historic grandstand this week as the installation of the large retention basin and associated infrastructure has been completed ahead of schedule. It marks the end of Santa Anita Park’s three-year, three phase project at a cost of just under $18 million that was constructed completely underground to allow the return of the parking lot to its original use.

The work was primarily done on the racetrack’s dark, non-racing days as to reduce the impact on racing and training for the horses. It did, however, close the normal owner-trainer parking lot that is adjacent to the grandstand.

“We thank the owners and trainers, who put so much into the sport, for their patience and understanding during this process,” said Nate Newby, Santa Anita’s SVP and General Manager. “It was disruptive to everyone’s normal routine, but it was a necessary and very expensive project for Santa Anita to continue operation.”

Required by the Federal Clean Water Act and State Law, the basin retains the wastewater from the track’s Stable Area and diverts it to the sanitary sewer, greatly improving the quality of storm water that is discharged to the Arcadia Wash and ultimately into Los Angeles’ rivers and the Pacific Ocean.

Construction of phases one and two began in the summer of 2022 in the area underneath Santa Anita’s West Parking Lot. The third phase began last October in the owner-trainer parking lot.
