MR. A.P. LEADS SATURDAY’S TOKYO CITY CUP GOING ONE MILE AT SANTA ANITA PARK
The Tokyo City Cup will be joined by the Senator Ken Maddy Stakes for fillies and mares on the hillside turf course on a nine-race card. First post is at 1 p.m. PT.
ARCADIA, CA (Oct. 19, 2026)—After a solid fourth-place finish in the GI Goodwood Stakes at Santa Anita when facing older horses for the first time, Mr. A.P. receives class relief and shortens up in distance in the $85,000 Tokyo City Cup going one mile Saturday at Santa Anita Park.
Trained by Vladimir Cerin, Mr. A.P. finished 4 ¼ lengths back of winner Forged Steel in the Goodwood going 1 1/8 miles on Sept. 26. The ridgling by American Pharoah raced in mid-pack early, moved up to second behind Forged Steel at the six-furlong marker and then flattened out in the stretch to complete the superfecta in a nine-horse field. Runner-up in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, Mr. A.P. in three previous starts this year, all on turf, won an allowance at Del Mar which was bookended by a third-place finish in the Oceanside at Del Mar in July and ninth-place effort in the Gun Runner Stakes last month at Kentucky Downs.
Owned by David Wilson and Holly Wilson, Mr. A.P. is 8: 2-3-1 with $502,670 in earnings. He’ll have a new jockey as the leading rider at the Santa Anita Autumn Meet, Emisael Jaramillo, takes over for Joel Rosario. Rosario on Saturday will be riding at Keeneland where he has a pair of stakes mounts.
Malarchuk will be making his first start since finishing sixth in the GI Pacific Classic going 1 ¼ miles on Aug. 22 at Del Mar. Trained by Michael McCarthy, the 5-year-old horse by Nyquist in two previous starts this year was second in both the GII Hollywood Gold Cup in May at Santa Anita and the 1 1/8-mile Sunland Park Stakes in April. He is owned by ERJ Racing and Reddam Racing and enters with a record of 11: 3-5-1 with $321,410 in earnings. Jockey Umberto Rispoli, who was aboard for the Pacific Classic, again has the call.
Arrowthegreat returned after more than a year on the sidelines with a promising allowance win going one mile on Aug. 30 at Del Mar. The effort earned a career-best 96 Beyer Speed Figure, which puts him squarely in the mix on Saturday. Prior to the layoff, Arrowthegreat earned his lone stakes win in the Longacres Mile at Emerald Downs in August of 2025.
Trained by Dan Blacker, Arrowthegreat is a 6-year-old gelding by Arrogate owned by Double L Racing, Radley Equine, John Cavalli and partners. He has a record of 19: 5-6-1 with $328,890 in earnings. Arrowthegreat will be ridden by Armando Ayuso, who was also aboard for his comeback win.
