MIZUMI PULLS AWAY LATE TO WIN THE GRADE III SUMMERTIME OAKS GOING 1 1/16 MILES IN HER STAKES DEBUT SATURDAY AT SANTA ANITA

Trained by Bob Baffert for Baoma Corp., the filly by Justify was making just her second start and first around two turns

ARCADIA, CA (June 13, 2026)—Making just her second start and first around two turns, Mizumi improved to 2-for-2 while also becoming a newly minted graded-stakes winner in the Grade III, $100,000 Summertime Oaks going 1 1/16 miles Saturday at Santa Anita.

Sent off the 3-5 favorite, Mizumi stalked the pace along the rail under Juan Hernandez, collared leader Wolf Hill (10-1) inside the final furlong and won going away by 3 ¾ lengths. Mizumi, a daughter of Justify, is trained by Bob Baffert for owner Baoma Corp.

“She was travelling beautifully when I was covered up, but around the turn when I swung out and started to make my run she got lost a little bit, she was looking around,” Hernandez said. “I shook my hands and put her in the bridle and she took off and started running again. She won easy. It was only her second start and first time going long. She relaxed beautifully.” Earlier on the card, Hernandez also won the GIII Daytona Stakes aboard Freedom’s Not Free for trainer Mark Glatt.

Finishing third was Bank Shot (7-1), who was ridden by Adrian Escobedo for trainer Ryan Hanson. Mizumi won in a time of 1:43.41 following fractions of 23.31, 46.74 and 1:10.67 and 1:36.96. Previously, she won her debut sprinting 6 ½ furlongs on May 2 at Santa Anita.

“That was really impressive for a second time out,” Baffert said. “Ricky Gonzalez rode her the first time, filling in for Juan, and he rode her great that day. Today, second out, to be stuck behind horses, Juan rode her with a lot of confidence. You could tell that she was just kicking on. Juan came back and I could tell he was pretty impressed.”.

Charles Chu, who bred Mizumi, with the Distorted Humor mare Sweet Opportunity, operates Baoma Corp along with his wife Susan Chu.

“The Chu’s have been great clients of mine,” Baffert said. “We kept breeding to Justify and we finally got a good Justify on the dirt. We are excited with that.”

Mizumi paid $3.20, $2.20 and $2.10. Wolf Hill, ridden by Antonio Fresu for trainer Leonard Powell, returned $4.60 and $2.80. Bank Shot paid $3.00.

Live racing resumes Sunday at Santa Anita with a 12-race card starting at 1 p.m. Also note that on Monday, Santa Anita will host a bonus eighth-race card that was not originally scheduled. First post is also at 1 p.m. There will be mandatory payouts in all pari-mutuel pools on both Sunday and Monday, which are the final two days of the Hollywood Meet. On Monday, parking and admission are free and on-track patrons will also be able to enjoy an all-day Happy Hour with 50 percent off select beer and cocktails.

GRADE III, $100,000 SUMMERTIME OAKS STAKES QUOTES

JOCKEY QUOTES

JUAN HERNANDEZ, MIZUMI, WINNER: “She was travelling beautifully when I was covered up. Around the turn when I swung out and started to make my run, she got lost a little bit, she was looking around. So I shook my hands and put her in the bridle and she took off and started running again. She won easy. It was only her second start and first time going long. She relaxed beautifully.

TRAINER QUOTES

BOB BAFFERT, MIZUMI, WINNER: “That was really impressive for a second time out. Ricky Gonzalez rode her the first time, filling in for Juan, but he rode her great that day. Today, second out to be stuck behind horses, Juan rode her with a lot of confidence. You could tell that she was just kicking on. Juan came back and I could tell he was pretty impressed. She is owned by the Chu’s, who have been great clients of mine. We kept breeding to Justify and we finally got a good Justify on the dirt, so we are excited with that.

“We were just happy to get her to the races. At the two and a half, I think she was in an awkward position. But when he asked her to go she took off and at the eighth pole she just caught another gear. That is something you want to see going down the road. It is nice to have a good 3-year-old filly like that. Now she is a stakes winner. I was really impressed with her myself.”

NOTES: The winning owners are Baoma Corp.
