GRADE III WINNER ARTISLAS LOOKS TO GET BACK ON THE BEAM IN NEXT SUNDAY’S $100,000 EDDIE LOGAN STAKES FOR 2-YEAR-OLDS GOING A MILE ON TURF AT SANTA ANITA
ARCADIA, CA (Dec. 22, 2024)—Artislas, who was disqualified from a second Grade III win during the Santa Anita Autumn Meet, headlines a field of eight 2-year-olds set to go a mile on turf in next Sunday’s $100,000 Eddie Logan Stakes at Santa Anita.
Trained by Jeff Mullins, Artislas bagged his first stakes win when taking the GIII Del Mar Juvenile Turf going a mile in September. A month later at Santa Anita, the Catalina Cruiser colt crossed the wire first in the GIII Zuma Beach but was disqualified and placed third due to a bumping incident near the wire.
Following the DQ, Artislas tried the one-mile Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance at Del Mar Nov. 1 and never threatened when finishing eighth. For his return to Santa Anita, Artislas has lured the services of top jockey Flavien Prat.
A $100,000 auction purchase earlier this year, Artislas is 4: 2-0-1 with $117,500 in earnings for owners Irving Ventures LLC, Michelle Arthur, William Meathe and Jeanne Tumanjan.
While still a maiden, Sabertooth was part of the three-horse scrum near the wire in the Zuma Beach that resulted in Artislas’ disqualification. Sabertooth was third, a head back of Aritslas, but was elevated to second.
Most recently, Sabertooth dropped into a maiden race for statebreds at one mile on turf at Del Mar and was beaten a half-length at 2-5 on Nov. 29. The winner that day, King of Dragons, is also entered back in the Eddie Logan.
Sabertooth, who is trained by Tim Yakteen, has finished runner-up five times in six starts while banking $81,300 for owner George A. Sharp. The colt by Grazen will have Umberto Rispoli in the irons.
King of Dragons was making his third start when edging Sabertooth to earn his diploma. Trained by Richard Baltas, the Sir Prancealot colt races as a homebred for Cicero Farms. He will be ridden by Kazushi Kimura, who was also aboard for the graduation score.
A new face in the lineup is Precision, who was recently imported from Europe by owner-breeder Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners and sent to trainer Michael McCarthy. Precision, by the Acclamation stallion Expert Eye, made two starts in Europe which includes a win going 1 1/16 miles on synthetic at Wolverhampton on Nov. 16.
Precision’s only local work was Sunday morning when going four furlongs on the main track in 50.80 seconds.
