ARCADIA, Calif. (Oct. 28, 2022)—Favored Buzz of New York, a 4-year-old Irish-bred filly trained by Phil D’Amato, saved ground at the rail while perched just in behind her pacesetting stablemate Annaghlasa to the top of the lane and burst through inside with a furlong to run en route to an emphatic 1 ¼ length win in Friday’s $63,000 Santa Anita allowance feature. Ridden by Juan Hernandez, who chalked up a riding double, Buzz of New York, who steadied while in very tight quarters with three sixteenths of a mile to run, got one mile on turf in 1:35.18 with the temporary inner rail set at 30 feet.
Second while favored at the same first condition allowance level going a mile on turf Sept. 4 at Del Mar, Buzz of New York was off at 2-1 in a field of nine fillies and mares three and up and paid $6.40, $4.40 and $2.80.
“It looked like Juan was loaded most of the way,” said D’Amato. “My other horse was on the lead and I thought she was comfortable too, but she was coming off the bench (idle since March 11) and I think she probably needed the race. It was a masterful ride by Juan, coming up the rail and he had plenty left.”
Owned by Red Baron’s Barn and Rancho Temescal, Buzz of New York, who broke her maiden four starts back in November, 2021, now has two wins from eight stateside starts with D’Amato and is 14-2-3-3 overall. With today’s winner’s cut of $37,800, she increased her earnings to $147,877.
Ridden by Ricky Gonzalez, Agreetodisagree came rolling from far back to just touch Gillian Elizabeth by a nose and paid $9.40 and $5.40 while off at 11-1. Gillian Elizabeth, who rallied gamely between horses a furlong out, was gaining on the winner but lost a head-bob for second money while 1 ½ lengths clear of Emerald Lake. Off at 7-2 with Joe Bravo, Gillian Elizabeth paid $3.60 to show. Fractions on the race were 23.55, 47.96, 1:12.11 and 1:23.91.
Racing resumes on Saturday with first post time for a 10-race card that includes seven stakes at 1 p.m. Santa Anita will guarantee a $1 million payout in the event there is a Single Ticket winner in the track’s 20 cent Rainbow Pick Six Jackpot, which covers races five through 10.
