BUST OUT PULLS AWAY LATE UNDER JARAMILLO TO EARN FIRST STAKES WIN IN THE CINEMA STAKES FOR 3-YEAR-OLDS GOING ONE MILE ON TURF SUNDAY AT SANTA ANITA
Trained by Michael McCarthy, Bust Out is owned by Tim Pegram and Jacob “Gator" Pegram, the son and grandson of prominent Kentucky Derby-winning owner Mike Pegram. This was the first stakes win for the partnership.
ARCADIA, CA (May 17, 2026)—Bust Out did just that Sunday at Santa Anita when earning his first stakes win in the $100,000 Cinema Stakes for 3-year-olds going one mile on turf.
With jockey Emisael Jaramillo aboard, Bust Out (3-2) pressed pacesetter Charlie’s Curlin (8-5) through tepid fractions of 24.50, 49.05 and 1:12.70, put a head in front of that rival at the drop of the stretch and then pulled away to win comfortably by 1 ¾ lengths. Iriseach (9-5), ridden by Antonio Fresu, ran pass Charlie’s Curlin for second after racing behind the two leaders while saving ground throughout.
Trained by Michael McCarthy, Bust Out won in a time of 1:36.30.
“I could feel the pace was not very fast, so I wanted to get him up close to the horse on the lead,” Jaramillo said. “When we turned into the stretch, my horse still had a lot left and finished strong.”
For Jaramillo, this was his fifth stakes win through the first 17 days of the Hollywood Meet. No other jockey has more than two stakes wins at the stand.
McCarthy was not at Santa Anita Sunday. He leads all trainers with four stakes wins at the Hollywood Meet.
Bust Out is co-owned by Tim Pegram and Jacob “Gator” Pegram. Tim Pegram is the son of prominent Kentucky Derby-winning owner Mike Pegram. Jacob Pegram is Tim Pegram’s son. This was the first stakes win for the partnership.
By Complexity, Bust Out was purchased for $115,000 at last year’s OBS March sale of 2-year-olds in training. In January, he made his stakes debut in the Baffle Stakes at about 6 ½ furlongs on the hillside turf course and finished fifth. Stretched out to a mile on turf for his next start, a first-level allowance, Bust Out finished a neck back of Charlie’s Curlin in second.
Bust Out paid $5.00 as the slight favorite.
Live racing resumes Friday at Santa Anita with a nine-race card starting at 1 p.m.
