The Sunday program offers a 10-race slate with a first post time of 1 p.m.

There’s an early first post of 11:30 a.m. for Preakness at Santa Anita. A challenging 11-race program awaits along with a $52,534 Pick-6 carryover.

In the opener, #6 L T Reckless plummets to the $16,000 level after finishing far back in the Santa Paula Stakes. A repeat of her race before last – a highly-rated starter’s allowance victory – crushes this field, but is the class drop an ominous sign? Tread lightly.

Racing resumes on Friday with a twilight first post of 3:00 p.m. for the eight-race program.

Juveniles sprint four and one-half furlongs in the opener, and trainer Art Sherman, who already trains one pretty nice colt by Lucky Pulpit, may have another in #5 Kristi’s Copilot. With a series of impressive drills at Los Alamitos under his belt, he should be fit and ready to show his stuff first crack out of the box. He’s listed at 7/2 on the morning line but we’ll be surprised if doesn’t go lower.

The Mother’s Day program begins 1 p.m. with a nine card that does not offer a stakes race but still has plenty of wagering opportunities.

There’s little to work with in the opener, a six-runner bottom-rung maiden claimer. #2 Ice Cream Truck (even money) and #5 Goyan (6/5) will get the bulk of the support; both are stretching out for the first time. Goyan would appear to be the quicker of the two and if he can shake loose early without much pressure he may keep going. There is no effective late speed in the field.

A good nine race program begins at 1 p.m. with the featured Lazaro Barrera Stakes carded as the seventh event.

Thursday, May 8, 2014 - 23:15

Friday’s eight-race program begins with a late 3:00 p.m. first post time.

In the opener, the debuting #3 Sky Preacher has been very impressive in the morning for O’Neill and this juvenile son of Sky Mesa looks cranked up to win at first asking. There are a few others in the field that have promising work tabs but ‘Preacher looks like the goods so we’ll make him a straight play and rolling exotic single.
