ARCADIA, Calif. (Oct. 6, 2016)–A pair of classy fillies, Bob Baffert’s Luminance and Phil D’Amato’s Gloryzapper, head a wide open field of eight fillies and mares three and up going 6 ½ furlongs in Sunday’s Grade III, $100,000 LA Woman Stakes at Santa Anita.
LUMINANCE: Breaking from the rail, this 4-year-old Kentucky-bred daughter of Tale of the Cat responded with a game 1 ½ length win in a second condition allowance going six furlongs on July 27 at Del Mar. Second to Eclipse Award winning Stellar Wind in the Grade I Santa Anita Oaks in April, 2015, Luminance was then a disappointing fifth as the 6-5 favorite in that year’s Grade II, 1 1/8 miles Black Eyed Susan at Pimlico. Owned by Kaleem Shah, Inc., she’ll be sprinting for the third consecutive time on Sunday. With three wins from six starts, Luminance has earnings of $212,858.
GLORYZAPPER: With two wins and a second from three career sprint tries, she’ll shorten up out of three consecutive routes, with her most recent start resulting in a close eighth place finish in the Grade II John C. Mabee Stakes at 1 1/8 miles on turf Sept. 4. A 4-year-old Kentucky-bred filly by Ghostzapper, she’s been a gem of consistency, running first or second in her first six main track starts. With a return to dirt and a cutback in distance in the LA Woman, Gloryzapper rates a huge chance under Stewart Elliot. Owned by Hebert Bloodstock, Leggio and Peluso, she brings a 7-3-3-0 record and earnings of $165,045 to the LA Woman party.
