EURTON’S ASHLEYLUVSSUGAR & MOREY’S RYE HEAD FIELD OF 12 IN SUNDAY’S $100,000 CRYSTAL WATER STAKES AT ONE MILE ON TURF

RACE IS PART OF LUCRATIVE GOLDEN STATE SERIES FOR CALIFORNIA-BRED OR SIRED HORSES

ARCADIA, Calif. (May 17, 2018)–Trainer Peter Eurton’s classy Ashleyluvssugar and trainer William Morey’s consistent Rye head a field of 12 California-bred or sired 3-year-olds and up at one mile on turf in Sunday’s $100,000 Crystal Water Stakes at Santa Anita.

Named for Mrs. Connie M. Ring’s homebred son of Windy Sands, whose five Grade I victories included the 1977 Santa Anita Handicap, the Crystal Water is part of the C.T.B.A.’s Golden State Series, for horses bred or sired in California.

ASHLEYLUVSSUGAR

Owner:  Sharon Alesia, Bran Jam Stable and Ciaglia Racing, LLC                    Trainer:  Peter Eurton

Bred in California by his owners, this 7-year-old Game Plan gelding has been idle since running a close sixth in the Grade II Del Mar Handicap on Aug. 19.  A five-time graded stakes winner, Ashleyluvssugar is winless in two tries at a flat mile but has six wins from 11 starts over the Santa Anita turf.  Best served when he’s able to stalk the early pace, “Ashley” will get the services of leading rider Flavien Prat, who guided him to a half length win in his only try with him, the 1 1/18 miles Cal Cup Turf Classic five starts back on Jan. 28, 2017.  By far the leading money earner in the lineup, Ashleyluvssugar is 24-10-4-4 overall.

RYE

Owner:  Joseph P. Morey, Jr. Revocable Trust                    Trainer:  William Morey

Most recently third, beaten one length in the Grade III San Juan Capistrano Stakes on April 22 by classy Florida invader Nessy, Rye shortens up from a 1 ¾ miles on turf and figures to be well off the early Crystal Water pace.  A 5-year-old full horse by English Channel, Rye is in sharp, recent form and is 1-2 at a flat mile on grass.  A winner of the 1 1/8 miles Cal Cup Turf Classic as the 2-1 favorite three starts back on Jan. 27, Rye will be ridden back by Kent Desormeaux.  A winner of two of his five starts on the Santa Anita turf, he’s 18-0-5 overall with earnings of $323,199.
