WITH CAL-BRED INCENTIVE BONUS OF $9,180, LUCY DE BAGS $$39,780 FOR THE WIN IN OPEN COMPANY
ARCADIA, Calif. (Oct. 27, 2017)–With blinkers removed, favored Lucy De rallied to win Friday’s $51,000 Santa Anita allowance feature by a half length under Kent Desormeax. Trained by Richard Baltas, the 5-year-old California-bred mare by Decarchy got a mile and a quarter on turf in 2:00.04.
An attentive fourth and on the move three furlongs from home, Lucy De wheeled three-wide at the top of the stretch and gradually wore down a determined Bombilate to win going away.
“With the blinkers off today, she settled real nice,” said Baltas, who sent her out to a fourth place finish going a mile on turf Sept. 29. “Kent rode her great. He can really finish on one, can’t he?”
One of two California-breds in a field of nine fillies and mares three and up, Lucy De was off at 2-1 and paid $6.20, $3.40 and $2.40.
Owned by Mark and Daryle Ann (daughter of legendary actor, Slim Pickens) Giardino’s GGG Stables, Lucy De, who was unplaced in her only other try at a mile and a quarter, picked up her third win from 16 career starts. With the winner’s share of $39,780 (which includes $9,180 from the Cal-bred incentive fund) she boosted her career earnings to $174,143.
Ridden by Gary Stevens, Bombilate sat second to pacesetter Heavenly Thought nearly the entire trip, took a brief lead a sixteenth out, but was immediately engaged by the winner to her outside and finished second, 2 ¼ in front of Heavenly Thought.
Off at 4-1, Bombilate paid $4.80 and $3.20.
Off at 9-2 with Flavien Prat up, Heavenly Thought finished a neck in front of Shazara and paid $3.60 to show.
Fractions on the race were 23.13, 48.24, 1:12.88 and 1:37.15.
There is a special early first post time on both Saturday and Sunday at Santa Anita of 12:15 p.m., in order to accommodate 11-race programs on both days. For additional racing information, please visit santaanita.com.
