EASTERN INVADERS CON TE PARTIRO & HAPPY MESA TAKE ON STRONG LOCAL CONTINGENT AS 11 JUVENILE FILLIES CONTEST MILE ON TURF IN $100,000 SURFER GIRL STAKES ON MONDAY
SURFER GIRL TO SERVE AS PREP FOR GRADE I, $1 MILLION BREEDERS’ CUP JUVENILE FILLIES TURF
ARCADIA, Calif. (Oct. 7, 2016)–Eastern invaders Con Te Partiro and Happy Mesa, both minor stakes winners on turf, will take on a strong local contingent of 2-year-old fillies as a field of 11 will contest the $100,000 Surfer Girl Stakes at one mile on turf Monday at Santa Anita. With an eye to Nov. 4, the Surfer Girl will serve as a key prep to the Grade I, $1 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Santa Anita.
CON TE PARTIRO: Trained by Wesley Ward, this Kentucky-bred filly by Scat Daddy rated kindly in her third start and went on to an emphatic 5 ¾ length win going 5 ½ furlongs in a minor stakes at Saratoga Aug. 17. A first-out maiden special weight winner going 4 ½ furlongs on dirt at Keeneland April 13, she has two wins from three starts and will try a route of ground for the first time on Monday. Owned by Hat Creek Racing, Con Te Partiro will be ridden for the first time by Flavien Prat.
HAPPY MESA: Undefeated in two starts at Laurel Park in Maryland and trained by H. Graham Motion, she parlayed a solid gate to wire maiden $40,000 claiming win going 5 ½ furlongs on dirt into a solid come from behind minor stakes win on Sept. 10 going the same distance on grass. A Kentucky-bred filly by Sky Mesa, she has the pedigree to stretch out and remain on turf. Owned by Jerry Romans, Charlie Spiring and Zoom and Fish Stable, Inc., she’ll be ridden for the first time by French-born sensation Florent Geroux, in what will likely by a Breeders’ Cup audition.
DEER VALLEY: Owned by Glen Hill Farm, she comes off a game neck victory in a six furlong turf maiden special weight Sept. 15 at Keeneland, which was her second start. A Kentucky-bred filly by Speightstown, she’s trained by Tom Proctor and will retain the services of Drayden Van Dyke. Like most of her competition, she’ll try two turns for the first time on Saturday.
SHY: Part of a deep local contingent, this filly by Kitten’s Joy comes off a big second in her debut, a one mile turf maiden special weight at Del Mar Sept. 5. Forced to steady around the Club House turn and again in deep stretch, she was only beaten three quarters of a length while finishing with interest under Gary Stevens. Owned by trainer Vann Belvior and his wife Sauci, Shy will be ridden back by Stevens and rates a big chance in her second try going a mile on grass.
AUNTJENN: Third in the Grade II Sorrento Stakes going 6 ½ furlongs on dirt two starts back on Aug. 6, she was most recently fifth in a field of 12 in the one mile Juvenile Fillies Turf on Sept. 5 at Del Mar. Trained by Kristin Mulhall, this Kentucky-bred by Uncle Mo is owned by Ike and Dawn Thrash and will be making her fifth career start.
