DEEP & COMPETITIVE FIELD OF NINE TO PROVIDE PARI-MUTEL FIREWORKS ON CLOSING DAY
ARCADIA, Calif. (July 1, 2017)–A deep and competitive field of nine, headed by classy comebacker Om, Flamboyant, Alert Bay and Si Sage are positioned to provide fans with some pari-mutuel fireworks at a flat mile on turf in Santa Anita’s closing day Grade III, $100,000 American Stakes this Tuesday at Santa Anita.
A multiple graded stakes winner, Om, trained by Dan Hendricks, has been idle since November, while Flamboyant and Alert Bay are in sharp recent form. Si Sage, a two-time graded winner, has been idle for nearly a year.
OM: Idle since third, beaten a half length as the 3-2 favorite in the Grade II, 1 1/16 miles on turf Seabiscuit Handicap at Del Mar Nov. 26, he was second, beaten a nose in the Grade I Breeders’ Cup Sprint going 6 ½ furlongs down the hillside turf course here two starts back on Nov. 5. A versatile sort with tremendous natural speed, his last win came in the Grade II Mathis Brothers Mile seven starts back here on Dec. 26, 2015. Ridden by Gary Stevens in his last 10 races, Om, a 5-year-old full horse by Munnings, is 6-2-2-1 at a mile on turf and is 16-5-4-4 overall. Owned by the Sareen Family Trust, he has earnings of $848,845.
FLAMBOYANT: A 6-year-old French-bred gelding trained by Paddy Gallagher, he was second, beaten a head in the Grade III All American Stakes going one mile on synthetic Tapeta at Golden Gate Fields on May 29. With an abundance of speed signed on, the American could well flatter his considerable closing kick and it’ll be up to regular rider Brice Blanc to time his move as he seeks his sixth win in what will be his 28th career start. Owned by David Bienstock and CHRB Chairman, Charles Winner, Flamboyant has earnings of $797,403.
ALERT BAY: One of the most consistent, hard knocking California-bred geldings of the current decade, Alert Bay, a 6-year-old son of City Zip, finished third, just a head behind Flamboyant, in Golden Gates Grade III All American on May 29. A winner of the Grade III San Francisco Mile (turf) two starts back at Golden Gate on April 29, he’s won two out of his last three starts, which have all been at one mile. Trained by Blaine Wright and owned by Peter Redekop BC, Ltd, Alert Bay has five wins and two seconds from seven tries at one mile on turf. With a remarkable overall record of 32-14-7-3, he has earnings of $1,240,555.
SI SAGE: Trained by Jim Cassidy, this classy French-bred has been idle since running a close fourth in the Grade II Eddie Read Stakes at Del Mar on July 17, 2016. A two-time graded stakes winner, this 7-year-old has shown good speed on many occasions and will likely be forwardly placed in his first start in almost a year. Owned by Red Baron’s Barn, LLC, Rancho Temescal and Vayaconsuerte, LLC, Si Sage has two wins from nine tries at a mile on grass and is 27-5-6-2 overall with earnings of $396,795.
