MARIO GUTIERREZ, B SQUARED, WINNER: “He’s been training really well lately. We always think he’s a little better than the grass so we always have that in the back of our heads – how well he’ll run over the dirt. The track was kind today and he liked it a lot.

“It was a five-horse field. My horse has a lot of speed but I didn’t want to go head and head with anybody but at the same time, I didn’t want to leave him too much to do at the end. I wanted to be within target distance for him as long as he was full of run. It just worked perfectly today.”

JOE TALAMO, TOUGH SUNDAY, SECOND: “He fought back big today. I wish Make It a Triple hadn’t pressed us so much early. That kind of took its toll a little bit but Tough Sunday was so courageous down the lane. He was trying to fight back.

“You can’t fault his record. I mean, even when he doesn’t win, he’s right there. Especially with his story, he’s great and such a cool horse.”

DOUG O’NEILL, TRAINER, B SQUARED, WINNER:  “The race set up perfect for us.  Mario rode his race and we were able to get up late. The Reddam’s are a big part of the Cal-bred program and B Squared is a great fit. We always say, once you break your maiden, you’re paid for…It’s like having a free horse.”
