COREY NAKATANI, TOP KISSER, WINNER: “It was my first time on her today. She sprinted really well when she first started out (going 6 ½ at Hollywood Park in 2012). Dan (Ward) and Jerry (Hollendorfer) give me opportunity after opportunity on horses and I’m so glad she was in the right spot here today. She was feeling good and I was just biding my time to let her do a little running and I let her stretch her legs. She ran really well.”
FRANK ALVARADO, MARKS MINE, SECOND: “I have no excuse. She got a little tired the last sixteenth of a mile but no excuses. This was the plan, to just go, she had to go, no taking her back or doing anything stupid.”
JERRY HOLLENDORFER, TOP KISSER, WINNER: “We thought we had her ready (having not raced since last July 20) and was in the clear and responded when asked to run. We got lucky and got out of the gate good, too.
“The Tommy Town facilities are real nice, and we turn a lot of horses out there, so we turned her out there and gave her some time, and she came back and responded.”
STEVEN SPECHT, MARKS MINE, SECOND: “Everything went perfect, except for the finish (laughing). She just got outrun. She ran her race. She got a good break from the gate, which kind of concerned me being down on the inside. But she got a good break away from there and made the lead and wasn’t pressured too hard. I thought she had the race won until I looked up and saw the bottom horse coming up on us. Can’t take it away from them. We just got outrun today.”
(On being on the rail): “It didn’t make any difference. She’s going to be in front unless she breaks bad. That was the only thing that worried me. She got away from there good. We just got beat. There’s no excuse.”
NOTES: The winning owners/breeders are Tom and Debi Stull of Santa Ynez, who race as Tommy Town Thoroughbreds, LLC.
