DRAYDEN VAN DYKE, PEE WEE REESE, WINNER: “I didn’t think he was going that quick unless he is just that fast of a horse, but he was well within himself the whole way. He was on cruise control. He gave me a nice kick down the lane. I was loaded from the word go, but he was nice and relaxed even though it was a fast time. That was fun.”
PHIL D’AMATO, PEE WEE REESE, WINNER: “This horse runs really well fresh. We gave him lots of time to recover from Del Mar last year and he came back a nice, fresh, happy, healthy horse. When he’s like that, he’s unstoppable. Drayden said he was pricking his ears out there and just doing it really comfortably. I think he is a good miler, but down the hill he is a force to be reckoned with.”
NICK ALEXANDER, PEE WEE REESE, WINNER:: “He’s a cool horse. He’s had high suspensories pretty much his whole life (explaining his seven-month absence). The Cal-bred program is the only thing that keeps us in business. Between the maiden bonuses, and being protected in the first allowance conditions, being able to run against nothing but Cal-breds, the breeders’ awards, the stallion awards. It makes a difference between profit and loss every year.
“He’s very special for us. He’s had is problems along the line and unfortunately we lost his mare a couple of years ago, we think he may be a pretty good stallion . . . I would like to say thank you to Carrie and Frank back at the ranch and all the rest of the crew who took such good care of him when he was laid up, awesome job.”
NOTES: The winning owner/breeder is Nick Alexander.
