RAFAEL BEJARANO, STORMY LUCY, WINNER: “It was my first time on her. Today was perfect. She broke well and I got a great position. I got through on the rail and she came flying.”

MIKE SMITH, EMOLLIENT, FOURTH: ” . . . It was her first race back. She was a little eager in the wrong place. Honestly, that’s all it was. She still ran well and I think she got a lot out of it.”

FRANK LUCARELLI, STORMY LUCY, WINNER: All I told him (Rafael Bejarano) was, ‘You do the riding, but she’ll go anywhere.’ She’ll go inside, between ’em, around ’em, over ’em. She’s an easy horse to get around there. You’ve just got to find the right spot.

“I love Isaias Enriquez. He rode her very well in the mile and an eighth here (Robert J. Frankel Stakes) to get beat a nose. The mile (of the Buena Vista) is not a good distance, but anytime you can get Rafael on a horse . . . He rode her, and I was very thankful for that and it certainly had a great outcome. I’ve won a couple smaller stakes here but this is my first graded win at Santa Anita and I’ve been training for 35 years, ever since I got released from the minor leagues (laughing).”

NOTES: Lucarelli has been training for 35 years. The winning owner is Erica Gaunt of Eaton, Washington.
