SAN LUIS REY STAKES QUOTES-FRIDAY, MARCH 29, 2019

 JOCKEY QUOTES

TYLER BAZE, EPICAL, WINNER: “I gave him a breather around the first turn, he’s a special horse just want to thank Jim and Darren who let me come back and ride him, he is a very special horse, I knew he was something all along. I count on the trainers and the horse, I go out there and do my job I have confidence they have done there’s already and go get the job done.”

“I came back to ride him.  I counted on the trainer to have him ready.  I should have won on him the last time, but we got a poor start.  They schooled him in the gate and it showed today.  He’s a nice horse.  Once we got going on the turn, he showed his big turn of foot.  I like to ride fast horses in marathon races.  He was relaxed and when it was time to go, he took off.  (Baze on what is next?)  I’m leaving tonight.  I’m going to be riding the rest of the Oaklawn meeting and then head to Churchill Downs.  We will play it by ear.  I love Santa Anita.  This is my home.”

RAFAEL BEJARANO, BEACH VIEW, SECOND:  “I thought I was in a good position, but nobody was going with Tyler’s horse, so I moved a little early at the three eighths (pole).  No excuse, the winner was best today.”

MARIO GUTIERREZ, MARCKIE’S WATER, THIRD: “My horse doesn’t have much speed and I found myself up close, so I had to put a little pressure on the leader. I thought Kent’s horse would be up front pushing the pace, so when I didn’t see him I decided to push otherwise in a race of that length an easy leader can get away. I though my horse ran a big race considering the strength of the field.”

TRAINER QUOTES

JIM CASSIDY, EPICAL, WINNER: “It was a gate thing last time out (San Marcos Stakes Feb 9th), he does everything perfect, but he’s not the best gate horse in the world, what he did last time was he hopped out of there and shuffled back a bit and he showed a new dimension, he came home pretty good but he still got beat and came in second. You know the first time Tyler rode him he said ‘I think he could go three miles’ There aren’t too many 3 mile races but he’s got speed and he doesn’t mind the horse next to him that goes with him it doesn’t seem to rattle him at all he’s very kind and he’ll go as far as you want to go.
“Kent Desormeaux rode this horse a while back and he thought the horse was going to run off with him, so he took a hold of him and he knew that was the wrong move. Tyler and Victor got boxed in and couldn’t get out in a few races, so we had a few excuses for previous races.
“We had a few struggles along the way with this horse, but he has had the right trip in the last few races and it shows.”
