ALONSO QUINONEZ, SOI PHET, WINNER: “First of all, I want to thank the owners but today was all him, he’s all heart.

“I was very confident today. That race was the plan that I talked about with Leonard. Break well, stay inside down by the rail, follow the speed, wait until the stretch and just see what you’ve got at the end.

“It’s so great to be back in Southern California and I don’t plan to leave anytime soon.”

MARIO GUTIERREZ, B SQUARED, SECOND:  “He ran great.  He tried very hard and we were a little bit unlucky with the winner sneaking up the inside.”

FLAVIEN PRAT, ASHLEYLUVSSUGAR, FOURTH AS THE FAVORITE:  “He ran great.  He stumbled leaving the gate and I found myself pretty far back and they didn’t go that fast so he had a lot to overcome.”

LEONARD POWELL, SOI PHET, WINNER: “I wouldn’t say I was extremely confident today but I am always confident in him. I knew he was doing well. In his last race when Bob Baffert’s horse passed him I think he thought, ‘I’m too old for this and I’ll set myself up for another day.’ And, today was that day.

“His last race took nothing out of him. I knew he had lost nothing in weight and it’s better now than it’s been in the last two years. I knew he was doing well and he’s rewarding us. He weighs 1,167 now and last year about this time he weighed 1,145.

“The way it unfolded was the exact plan. I spoke with Alonso this morning and I told him there was quite a bit of speed in there and to just let him go, put him in a pocket inside and when it opens, just make your move.

“He doesn’t care if he’s a millionaire or not. I just want to do what’s best for him. We’ll just race him as long as he’s happy. I hope another year, but he’ll tell us. There’s a race at Los Al in July, I’ll race him once or twice at Del Mar, again in September and then he’ll get a vacation and we’ll try it all again next year.”

NOTES: The winning owners are the Benowitz Family Trust, Mathilde Powell and Paul Viskovich.
