GARY STEVENS, SHARP SAMURAI, WINNER: “I had a great trip. I was just following the leaders and he was going easy.

“In the stretch, I pulled my stick through with my left hand, used it once, he responded and we were head and head with Flavien and Fly to Mars. I went up to use it again, and Flavien was coming down with his at the same time, hit my hand, and I lost it way outside of the sixteenth pole.

“It was close and the credit goes to the other horse. My horse was game, Flavien’s horse was game. It was close.

“At the wire, I knew I won and Flavien knew I won as well. He said some words I can’t repeat. I said, ‘You’re the one who knocked the whip out of my hand, I should be the one cussing.'”

MARK GLATT, TRAINER OF SHARP SAMURAI, WINNER:  “I didn’t think he won.  I honestly thought the other horse got the bob.  I didn’t see Gary lose his stick watching it live, but when they showed the replay, I saw it.

WHEN ASKED ABOUT THE PROBABILITY OF RUNNING IN THE GRADE I BREEDERS’ CUP TURF MILE ON NOV. 3 IN KENTUCKY:  “We certainly had to have a good run today and we did.  We’ll hope to be able to get in it, he deserves it.”

JEDD COHEN, RED BARON’S BARN, CO-OWNER:  “Next time Gary rides him, we’re gonna give him two whips!  (Seriously), if we can get a firm turf in Kentucky, we’d love to go.  We’d like to go, he’s a very tough dude right now.”

TIM COHEN, RED BARON’S BARN, SHARP SAMURAI, WINNER:  “I’m glad Gary knew we won because I thought we lost. If Gary knew, it was all news to me!

“What an honest horse and Mark has done such a great job managing him. We gave him some time and wanted to get him ready for his 4-year-old year. We’ve had some tough races and some tough losses and this could have been one those as well but it turned out well.

“I’d certainly love to go to Churchill and the horse deserves to be there. Hopefully, we have enough points to get in. We avoided going into the “Win and You’re In’s” this year because we thought we might be able to do it on points.”
