TIAGO PEREIRA, BARBARA BEATRICE, WINNER: “I took ahold of her out of the gate and she rated very kind with me today. At the half mile pole, Kent Desormeaux (aboard favored Moonless Sky) started to move, so I just followed him. When we crossed the dirt, I asked her and she took off. She really ran great today.”

PHIL D’AMATO, WINNER: “She surprised me today. I thought she’d be coming from behind but I didn’t think there would be enough speed to set up for her. She kept coming today and I was impressed.

“Tiago gave a great ride. He gets along with her very well. He’s breezed her a few times at San Luis Rey and got her ready.

“She’s been doing really well and she just seems like she’s come back fresher and more willing and just came with a good run today. She was off for just a lot of little, niggling things, nothing major. Feet and then she got sore along her back and the combination of the two so we just took our time. She just really trains well and loves San Luis Rey.

“I think this is my first win as a breeder. I believe so. I’ve had a lot of stakes placed but I don’t think I’ve ever won as a breeder.

“This mare’s mother got hurt a long time ago when I was assistant to Mike Mitchell. I really liked her and she had a lot of talent. The owner at the time, Pete Bush, had a lot of horses on his hands and I asked if I could take the mare and nurse her back to health in hopes of getting her to become a broodmare. He was all for it. I got her and she has been nothing but good luck for me along the way.

“Nick Alexander was gracious enough to let me breed to Grazen and that combination has proven to be a good one. She’s got a full brother named Tony Blackjack that won a maiden special weight for me that’s coming back and another full brother in Grazen in America so we’ll just keep sending her to Grazen! Why not?!

“My grandmother was Beatrice and Becky’s mother was Barbara so we just put them together and we got a nice mare here.

“Queen Bee has been involved from the start. I liked the filly so I put them into the foal for half so we’re 50/50 partners.”

BECKY WANTA, WINNING OWNER (QUEEN BEE RACING): “She’s actually named for two very important women in our life. Phil’s grandmother, who got him into this sport, and my mother. So that’s how the name came together.

“Queen Bee is overdue for a win so thank god! Phil and his team are fantastic, we love them.”
