OMAHA BEACH COULD RETURN TO SANTA ANITA NEXT WEEK

Omaha Beach’s landing at Santa Anita has been delayed.

Originally scheduled to arrive tomorrow, the pre-race favorite for the May 4 Kentucky

Derby was declared out of the race on May 1 due to an entrapped epiglottis, necessitating throat surgery that was performed May 3 at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington.

The son of War Front trained by Richard Mandella is doing well but now won’t return to his home base of Santa Anita for another week or so.

“He’s still at WinStar Farm in Kentucky, but he’s not quite healed up yet,” the Hall of Fame trainer said Saturday morning. “He’ll be on a plane to California but we don’t have a schedule to know when that is.

“It shouldn’t be too long, perhaps a week or so. He is healing from the procedure, but it’s just not healed enough yet to ship him right now.”

EQUINE, RIDING STALWARTS POINTING TO GRADE I HOLIDAY

The countdown is on for gold and glory at Santa Anita Memorial Day, Monday, May 27, when three prestigious Grade I races offering $1.5 million will be decided: the Gamely for fillies and mares three and up at 1 1/8 miles on turf; the Gold Cup at Santa Anita for three-year-olds and up at a mile and a quarter; and the Shoemaker Mile on turf for three-year-olds and up.

Working towards those goals at Santa Anita Saturday morning were Frank E. Kilroe Mile winner Ohio for the Shoemaker and Santa Anita Handicap winner Gift Box for the Gold Cup.

Ohio, a bargain claim conditioned by Michael McCarthy, went five furlongs in 1:02.40, while Gift Box breezed six furlongs in 1:13.60 for John Sadler.

Vasilika, yet another bargain claim, is scheduled to work Monday on the training track for Jerry Hollendorfer, with designs on the Gamely.

Irad Ortiz and John Velazquez will be among the world-class riders displaying their talents on Memorial Day, as Ortiz is scheduled to pilot multiple graded stakes winner Rymska for Chad Brown in the Gamely and 2018 Kilroe winner Bowies Hero for Phil D’Amato in the Shoemaker, while Velazquez is set to ride last year’s Wood Memorial winner Vino Rosso for Todd Pletcher in the Gold Cup.

SINGLE TICKET RAINBOW PICK SIX JACKPOT CARRYOVER OF $551,262

Fans at Santa Anita today will be treated to a 20 cent Single Ticket Rainbow Pick Six carryover of $551,262.

With $121,496 in “new” money contributing to a total Jackpot pool Friday of $644,941, there was no single ticket winner, but 11 consolation tickets with six wins were each worth $5,900.60.

The Rainbow Six starts with race five, with an approximate post time of 2:19 p.m. PT.

FINISH LINES: Congratulations to long-time California breeder Terry Lovingier and partners on breeding the one-two finishers in Friday’s third race, Shady Empire, a two-year-old Empire Way colt trained by Jeff Bonde, and Side Street Dave, a two-year-old Govenor Charlie colt conditioned by Gary Sherlock. Both bred in California, each juvenile was making his first start . . . Good luck to owners Sam Waldner and Kevin Bussey, who campaign as Alydom Racing LLC with Jon White‘s 9-5 morning line favorite True Validity in today’s fourth race. The three-year-old chestnut filly trained by Andrew Lerner has won two of her last three starts, was claimed for $50,000 last out, and has been favored in eight of her 10 career races, four times at odds-on . . . The popular Spring Carnival at Santa Anita offers three days of exciting rides, games and entertainment on Memorial Day weekend, Saturday, May 25 through Monday, May 27. For details, please visit santaanita.com/events . . . When trainer Jerry Wallace sent out Fast Cotton to win Friday’s sixth race, it was not a one-hit wonder. His father, Jerry Wallace Sr., reached No. 8 on Billboard’s Hot 100 in 1959 with the iconic song, “Primrose Lane.”
