S Y SKY, CORDIALITY & BARBARA BEATRICE HEAD SOLID FIELD OF EIGHT IN SATURDAY’S $150,000 SUNSHINE MILLIONS FILLY & MARE TURF SPRINT AT 6 ½ FURLONGS DOWN HILLSIDE TURF
RACE IS PART OF LUCRATIVE GOLDEN STATE SERIES FOR CALIFORNIA-BRED OR SIRED RUNNERS; SPECIAL EARLY FIRST POST TIME FOR AN 11-RACE CARD AT SANTA ANITA IS AT 11:30 A.M.
ARCADIA, Calif. (Jan. 22, 2019)–Nick Alexander’s homebred S Y Sky, favored in seven out her eight lifetime starts, heads a field of eight California-bred or sired older fillies and mares in Saturday’s $150,000 Sunshine Million Filly & Mare Turf Sprint at 6 ½ furlongs down Santa Anita’s hillside turf course.
Also prominent in Saturday’s Turf Sprint are Cordiality, who goes first time off a $62,500 claim for Peter Miller and Barbara Beatrice, who like S Y Sky, is trained by Phil D’Amato. With two wins from four tries down the hillside S Y Sky also has the advantage of breaking from the far outside.
The Sunshine Million Filly & Mare Sprint is one of four Golden State Series races for California-bred or sire runners on Saturday’s 11-race program.
S Y SKY
Owner: Nick Alexander

A disappointing second as the 3-5 favorite in a state-bred allowance at 6 ½ furlongs on the main track Jan. 10, this 5-year-old mare by Grazen, out of Alexander’s Sky Marni, by Sky Mesa, was an impressive winner of her lone hillside start in July, 2017 and her connections are hopeful a return to the hill will key a return to the Winner’s Circle on Saturday. “That was kind of the game plan for S Y Sky as long as she came out of the race good,” said D’Amato yesterday morning when asked about his approach to Saturday’s Turf Sprint. “With all the weather we’ve been dealing with, and not being able to train them too hard, her last race was kind of a blessing. She’s doing well. She breezed this morning (a half mile in 48.60) as did Barbara Beatrice (a half mile on the training track in a bullet 48 flat), and they should be ready to go.” Lightly raced but immensely talented, S Y Sky is 8-4-3-1 overall with earnings of $367,320.
Owner: Rockingham Ranch & David Bernsen
Trainer: Peter Miller
Fresh off a banner year in which she won three of eight starts and banked $219,115, this 6-year-old mare by Papa Clem was claimed out of solid second place finish going a mile on turf here Dec. 30, very likely with the Turf Sprint in mind. A winner of one of two starts down the hill, classy Cordiality has to rate a huge chance first time out for both Miller and jockey Drayden Van Dyke. The leading money earner in the field with $429,280, her overall mark stands at 25-9-7-2.
Owner: Queen B Racing, LLC & D’Amato
Trainer: Phil D’Amato
Bred in California by D’Amato, this 7-year-old mare by Grazen, out of Showtime Apollo by Decarchy, was a well beaten fourth in the same race S Y Sky exits on Jan. 10 and Barbara Beatrice was no doubt in need of the outing. Having been idle since May 19, the recent race should help her immensely. Drawn well on the far outside, she, like her stablemate, has been lightly raced but very productive. With an overall mark of 20-5-4-2, she has earnings of $350,554.
