REDDAM’S HOMEBRED CARNIVOROUS RALLIES TO TAKE $51,000 SANTA ANITA ALLOWANCE FEATURE BY A HALF LENGTH UNDER CEDILLO; TRAINED BY O’NEILL, HE GETS 5 ½ FURLONGS ON TURF IN 1:02.24
ARCADIA, Calif. (Oct. 18, 2019)–Reddam Racing’s homebred Carnivorous shifted out for racing room in mid-stretch and was a handy half length winner of Friday’s $51,000 Santa Anita allowance feature. Ridden by Abel Cedillo and trained by Doug O’Neill, Carnivorous, by Reddam’s leading California-based stallion Square Eddie, got 5 ½ furlongs on turf in 1:02.24.
Boxed in behind rivals while a close third turning for home, Carnivorous, the 7-5 favorite in a field of seven 3-year-olds, was handled patiently by Cedillo and won with deceptive ease. One of two horses entered for an optional claiming tag of $80,000, was haltered by trainer Steve Knapp. (Cedillo collected his second win on the day, both in combination with O’Neill, and padded his lead in the rider standings to 14, three better than apprentice Jorge Velez).
Most recently fifth in a one mile turf classified allowance here on Sept. 27, Carnivorous, who is out of the Momentum mare Charred Rare, paid $4.80, $2.80 and $2.20.
“If you’re going to lose one, it’s always nice to win,” said O’Neill, who registered his second win of the day and increased his lead in the trainer’s standings by notching his 17th win of the meet–nine more than current runner-up Phil D’Amato. “These Square Eddie’s keep winning and it’s a big credit to Ocean Breeze Farm, where he stands. He’s getting better and better mares and he’s just an unbelievable stallion for California…Can’t wait to see his new babies in the spring!”
With today’s win, Carnivorous is now 13-5-1-2 overall and with the winner’s share of $39,780 (which included a California-bred owner’s premium of $9,180), his earnings stand at $250,409.
Ridden by Victor Espinoza, Tiger Dad, who made the lead while three-deep at the top of the lane, held second by a neck over One Flew South and paid $2.80 and $2.40 while off as the 2-1 second choice.
Ridden by Evin Roman, One Flew South held third money by a length over City Rage and paid $3.40 to show.
Fractions on the race were 21.78, 44.47 and 56.15.
