MIGHTY VASILIKA TOWERS OVER COMPETITION IN GRADE I, $500,000 GAMELY STAKES FOR FILLIES & MARES AT 1 1/8 MILES ON TURF MONDAY
ARCADIA, Calif. (May 24, 2019)–One of the most productive claims in racing history, Jerry Hollendorfer’s Vasilika heads a field of seven fillies and mares three and up in Monday’s Grade I, $500,000 Gamely Stakes at Santa Anita. Named for William Haggin Perry’s Hall of Fame daughter of Bold Ruler, the Gamely will be contested at a mile and one eighth on turf.
Although Vasilika looms a standout, she’ll be facing several who enter the Gamely in high form, including Chad Brown’s French-bred Rymska and the Richard Baltas-trained Elysea’s World.

A facile 2 ¾ length winner of the Grade II, one mile turf Royal Heroine Stakes here April 6, Vasilika, who was claimed out of a $40,000 win 14 starts back on Feb. 11, 2018, has won 12 out of her 13 starts for Hollendorfer, including six graded stakes (one Grade I). A 5-year-old mare by Skipshot, Vasilika has a tangible will to win that has been a joy to behold since coming to Southern California from New York in the winter of 2018. Well-adept at exploiting a fast pace from behind or stalking it, Vasilika finds a way to win with regular rider Flavien Prat, who will be aboard for the 14th consecutive time on Monday. With a remarkable overall record of 31-16-4-3, she has earnings of $1,058,595.

A winner of four graded stakes since joining Brown’s New York stable 10 starts back in the Grade I Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Santa Anita on Nov. 4, 2016, this 5-year-old French-bred mare was most recently second, beaten one length, in the Grade I, 1 1/16 miles turf Jenny Wiley Stakes at Keeneland April 13. With regular rider Irad Ortiz, Jr. in to ride for the eighth consecutive time, Rymska will try to improve upon an overall mark of 14-7-4-1 and earnings of $708,139.

Off as the 2-1 favorite, she was a prompt half length winner of the Grade III Santa Ana Stakes at a mile and one quarter on turf March 30 with Drayden Van Dyke, who rides back on Monday. A 6-year-old Irish-bred mare, Elysea’s World is one of several Gamely entrants that would benefit from a fast pace. Originally conditioned by Chad Brown, she’ll be making her third start for Baltas. Well accomplished, she has two graded stakes wins from an overall mark of 24-7-5-3 and earnings of $626,573.
