LONG FUSED ITSINTHEPOST RALLIES TO TAKE GRADE II, $200,000 MARATHON STAKES BY THREE QUARTERS OF A LENGTH UNDER VAN DYKE; TRAINED BY MULLINS, HE GETS 1 ¾ MILES IN 3:03.95
ARCADIA, Calif. (Nov. 1, 2019)–Although all 10 of his career victories had come on turf, French-bred Itsinthepost proved equally adept on dirt as he rallied to take Santa Anita’s Grade II, $200,000 Marathon Stakes by three quarter of a length under Drayden Van Dyke. Trained by Jeff Mullins, the 7-year-old gelding got a mile and three quarters in 3:03.95.
A close third after the first mile, Itsinthepost, who was most recently sixth in the Grade II Del Mar Handicap at 1 3/8 miles on turf Aug. 17, was on the move while three deep three furlongs from home and with 3-5 favorite Campaign out of contention, rolled to an authoritative win in what was his 41st start.
“I didn’t want to get in his way too much, so I just let him go,” said Van Dyke. “Jeff had him super ready. We have been working him on the training track and getting ready for this race. I looked back to see Campaign because he was my main concern. I didn’t see him, I guess he was way back.”
Off at 3-1 in a field of six 3-year-olds and up, Itsinthepost paid $8.80, $4.80 and $4.00.
“It was the distance, it’s all the distance…We had him really fit today and Drayden gave him a good ride.”
Owned by Red Baron’s Barn LLC, Itsinthepost, who was making only his third career start on the main track, banked $120,000 for the win, increasing his earnings to $1,384,253.
Zestful, who showed the way to the quarter pole, finished second by three quarters of a length over American Tattoo. Ridden by Joe Talamo, Zestful was off at 5-1 and paid $5.20 and $6.40.
Ridden by Jose Ortiz, Argentine-bred American Tattoo was off at 6-1 and paid $5.60 to show.
Fractions on the race were 25.07, 50.80, 1:17.03, 1:43.00 and 2:08.20.
