ARCADIA, Calif. (April 4, 2019)–Separated by one length when last they met, Irish-bred Lady Prancealot and Truffalino, along with classy California-bred Apache Princess, head a field of 10 three year old fillies going a mile and one eighth on turf in Saturday’s Grade III, $150,000 Providencia Stakes at Santa Anita.
The Providencia, one of seven stakes, five graded, which are headed by the Grade I, $1 million Santa Anita Derby and the Grade I, $600,000 Santa Anita Handicap, has been carded as the ninth race on an 11-race program.

Campaigned through her first five starts in England, she made her U.S. debut for Baltas at odds of 17-1 on Sept. 3 at Del Mar in an ungraded one mile stakes in which she demonstrated an impressive turn of foot, rallying for second from far off the pace. Subsequently second, beaten a head in the one mile turf Surfer Girl Stakes Oct. 8, she was then well beaten on yielding turf in the Grade I Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Churchill Downs Nov. 2. In what appeared to be her best race to date, she rallied from far back as the 8-5 favorite in a one mile turf allowance here on Feb. 1, winning by one length while leaving the impression she may appreciate an additional furlong. With top jock Joel Rosario set to ride her back, Lady Prancealot, who will be making her 11th career start, figures to get plenty of attention at the windows.

A disappointing fifth as the 6-5 favorite in the one mile turf California Oaks on Feb. 18, this California-bred daughter of Unusual Heat was a 3 ¼ length winner of the Grade III, 6 ½ furlong (dirt) Sweet Life Stakes two starts back on Feb. 10 and is the only graded stakes winner in the Providencia field. Favored in four out her last five starts, Apache Princess, who is out of the Indian Charlie mare Puskita, is 7-3-2-0 overall, with earnings of $177,960.

Second, beaten one length by Lady Prancealot in a one mile turf allowance here Feb. 1, this Kentucky-bred daughter of English Channel broke her maiden going a mile and one eighth on turf two starts back on Dec. 29 and is thus the only Providencia entrant to ever compete at this distance. Although the Providencia will be her first stakes assignment, Truffalino appears on the up-escalator for Mandella and should be plenty tough in what will be her fourth career start.
