FAVORED GLIDING BY TAKES $69,000 SANTA ANITA ALLOWANCE FEATURE BY 1 ½ LENGTHS AS PRAT & BALTAS TEAM FOR FIVE FURLONG TURF WIN IN 56.33
ARCADIA, Calif. (April 26, 2019)–Fourth going a mile on turf here April 14, Gliding By cut back in distance to five furlongs on grass today and responded with an authoritative 1 ½ length victory in Santa Anita’s $69,000 allowance feature under Flavien Prat. Trained by Richard Baltas, the 6-year-old Artie Schiller mare got the trip in 56.33.
Breaking alertly from post position two, Gliding By was a joint second at the rail, about one length off the lead heading into the far turn. With well-fancied Moon Kitty to her immediate outside and stubborn pacesetter Littlefirefighter on the lead, Prat bided his time inside and swung three-wide turning for home before unfurling a powerful stretch run that left no doubt about who was best.
Off as the 9-5 favorite in a field of six fillies and mares, Gliding By, the only member of the cast entered for an optional claiming tag of $62,500, paid $5.60, $3.40 and $2.40.
“She won going 6 ½ furlongs down the hill (two starts back on Feb. 18), but I’ve been running her long a lot and she’s a sprinter,” said Baltas, who also teamed with Prat for victory in Friday’s fourth race. “Going into this, I thought five furlongs might be a little short for her, but I think horses tell you sometimes what they want.”
Owned by Harry Bederian, Harout Kamberian and Hagop Nakkashian, Gliding By, who is out of the Arch mare Flying Arch, notched her sixth win from 26 starts and with the winner’s share of $41,400, increased her earnings to $253,117.
Ridden by Rafael Bejarano, Littlefirefighter fought off a stubborn challenge from Moon Kitty and was easily second, by three quarters of a length over English-bred Ficanas. Off at 4-1, Littlefirefighter paid $6.20 and $3.00.
Head and head with the winner mid-way around the far turn, Ficanas rallied well to be third under Martin Pedroza. Off at 5-2, she paid $2.60 to show.
Fractions on the firm turf were 22.45 and 45.24.
