FAVORED COLONIAL CREED WAVES FLAG IN $67,000 SANTA ANITA ALLOWANCE, AS SHE GOES GATE TO WIRE TO WIN BY ONE LENGTH UNDER ESPINOZA; TRAINED BY BALTAS, SHE GETS 1 1/8 MILES ON TURF IN 1:49.48

ARCADIA, Calif. (May 3, 2019)–With trainer Richard Baltas out of town to saddle horses at Churchill Downs, it was up to Victor Espinoza to “deliver the mail” aboard favored Colonial Creed in Friday’s $67,000 Santa Anita allowance feature and she did just that, going gate to wire for a one length win at a mile and one eighth on turf in 1:49.48.

“Richard sent me a message and just told me to put her into the race,” said Espinoza, who had never been aboard the 3-year-old daughter of Jimmy Creed. “It didn’t look like there was much speed in the race, so I decided to just put her on the lead and go for it.  It wasn’t that everyone else left me alone, they couldn’t keep up.”

Most recently a close fifth in the Grade III Providencia at 1 1/8 miles on turf April 6, Colonial Creed, who broke from post position five in a field of seven sophomore fillies, made an easy lead and was in complete control throughout, repelling stretch-long challenges from both Over Emphasize and Truffalino.

Off at even money, Colonial Creed paid $4.20, $2.80 and $2.20.

Owned by Doug Branham, Richard Baltas and Jerry McClanahan, Colonial Creed, who is out of the Scat Daddy mare Neverthesame, picked up $40,200 for the win, increasing her earnings to $114,825.

A one mile turf maiden winner three starts back at Del Mar Nov. 10, Colonial Creed is now 7-2-3-0 overall.

In a gutty effort, Over Emphasize saved ground while attentive to the pace throughout and prevailed by a neck over Truffalino.  Ridden by Alonso Quinonez, Over Emphasize was off at 11-1 and paid $7.60 and $3.80.

Second turning for home, Truffalino battled gamely to be third by a head over Out of Balance. Ridden by Joe Talamo, Truffalino was off at 2-1 and paid $2.60 to show.

Fractions on the race were 24.06, 49.03, 1:13.90 and 1:37.82.

Admission gates will open early on Kentucky Derby Day, Saturday, at Santa Anita at 7:15 a.m.  First live race post time for an 11-race card in Arcadia is at 12 noon.
