DEL MAR MAY TRIES TURF FOR THE FIRST TIME AND GOES GATE TO WIRE TO WIN $59,000 SANTA ANITA ALLOWANCE FEATURE BY 1 ¼ LENGTHS UNDER FRANCO; TRAINED BY BALTAS, SHE GETS 5 ½ FURLONGS ON TURF IN 1:02.83
ARCADIA, Calif. (Feb. 2, 2020)–Well beaten in a Grade I sprint stakes opening day, Calvin Nguyen’s Del Mar May tried turf for the first time on Sunday at Santa Anita and she responded with a rousing gate to wire performance, winning by 1 ¼ lengths under Geovanni Franco. Trained by Richard Baltas, the 4-year-old filly by Jimmy Creed got 5 ½ green furlongs in 1:02.83.
“You can see on her form she’s run in some really nice races and she’s a nice filly,” said Franco, who was aboard for the first time today. “She handled the grass well. I didn’t know if we’d be on the lead, but it didn’t look like there was too much speed in there, so it worked out good.”
Sixth, beaten 12 lengths going seven furlongs in the Grade I La Brea Stakes Dec. 28, Del Mar May was off at 4-1 in a field of seven older fillies and mares and paid $10.20, $7.60 and $4.40.
With today’s win, Kentucky-bred Del Mar May, who is out of the Distorted Humor mare Big Lou, is now 8-3-2-0. The winner’s share of $35,400 increases her earnings to $175,451.
Ridden by Mario Gutierrez, An Eddie Surprise sat a close fourth to the quarter pole, split horses two from the fence a furlong out and was second best on the day, finishing 1 ¼ lengths clear of Devils Dance. Off at 8-1, An Eddie Surprise paid $7.60 and $4.00.
Devils Dance, who broke from the far outside, sat second, just to the outside of the winner into and around the turn and held third money, finishing a neck in front of 2-1 favorite Holly Hundy. Ridden by Jorge Velez, Devils Dance was off at 6-1 and paid $4.40 to show.
Fractions, set by the winner, were 22.63, 45.60 and 57 flat.
