COURSE SPECIALIST CONQUEST TSUNAMI HEADS SUNDAY’S GRADE III, $100,000 SAN SIMEON STAKES AT 6 ½ FURLONGS DOWN HILLSIDE TURF

COURSE SPECIALIST CONQUEST TSUNAMI HEADS SUNDAY’S GRADE III, $100,000 SAN SIMEON STAKES AT 6 ½ FURLONGS DOWN HILLSIDE TURF

ARCADIA, Calif. (March 28, 2019)–Fresh off a rousing 4 ¼ length restricted stakes romp over the course, trainer Peter Miller’s Conquest Tsunami heads a field of seven older horses going 6 ½ furlongs down Santa Anita’s one of a kind hillside turf course in Sunday’s Grade III, $100,000 San Simeon Stakes.

A recent allowance winner down the hill, Miller’s Arms Runner gives the San Luis Rey Downs-based conditioner a solid one-two punch on Sunday and the Carla Gaines-conditioned Mesut is the third San Simeon entrant who exits a recent win down the hillside turf.

CONQUEST TSUNAMI

Owner:  Gary Barber
Trainer:  Peter Miller

Off as the 7-5 favorite in the nine-horse Clockers’ Corner Stakes here on Jan. 27, Conquest Tsunami called all the shots in a gate to wire win and couldn’t have been any more impressive while earning a 101 Beyer Speed figure.  A winner of three out of five hillside starts, including last year’s Grade III Daytona Stakes, this 7-year-old Stormy Atlantic gelding has compiled an overall mark of 30-9-4-5 and with earnings of $783,031, is strictly the horse to beat with Drayden Van Dyke back aboard.

ARMS RUNNER

Owner:  Rockingham Ranch
Trainer:  Peter Miller

With Martin Pedroza up, this 5-year-old Florida-bred gelding by the Tale of the Cat stallion Overdriven, stalked the early pace and rallied to take a second condition allowance over the course by half length on Jan. 27.  With three wins from four hillside tries, look for Pedroza to try to employ similar tactics on Sunday.

MESUT

Owner:  Keith Brackpool
Trainer:  Carla Gaines

A 5-year-old Gio Ponti gelding who was bred in Kentucky by his owner, Mesut rallied from far off the pace to win going away by a neck in a field of first condition allowance horses here on Jan. 27 and has the look of a horse who’s ready to take a big jump in class.  With Geovanni Franco ticketed to handle the return riding assignment, Mesut rates an upset chance in what will be his 11th career start and his first stakes assignment.
