Bella Vita Comes Off Bench To Head Sunday’s $100,000 Spring Fever Stakes

SHAH’S BELLA VITA COMES OFF BENCH TO HEAD SUNDAY‘S $100,000 SPRING FEVER STAKES FOR CAL-BRED DISTAFFERS AT SIX FURLONGS
RACE IS PART OF CTBA’s LUCRATIVE GOLDEN STATE SERIES FOR CAL-BRED OR SIRED RUNNERS

ARCADIA, Calif. (Feb. 18, 2021)–Kaleem Shah’s talented Bella Vita, idle since May 16, comes off the bench to head a field of seven California-bred or sired fillies and mares going six furlongs in Sunday’s $100,000 Spring Fever Stakes at Santa Anita.

Sponsored by the CTBA, the Spring Fever is part of the lucrative Golden State Series, for eligible California-bred or sired runners.

Trained by Simon Callaghan, Bella Vita, who sold for $400,000 at the Ocala Breeders’ Sales 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale in April, 2019, showed ample precocity in four starts last year, her most recent a close second in the six furlong Evening Jewel Stakes May 16, which was her first start on dirt after three races on turf.

By Shah’s 2014 Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Bayern, out of the Storm Cat mare Queenie Cat, Bella Vita has talent and considerable pedigree in her corner as well as the services of leading man Flavien Prat.

Kristen Mulhall’s homebred Hotitude, who comes off a subpar fifth place effort versus open company in a six furlong allowance here Feb. 7, gets back with statebreds and should be tough with Juan Hernandez riding back.  A gutty neck winner at the same level and distance two starts back on Jan. 10, Hotitude, a 5-year-old mare by the Distorted Humor stallion Heat Shield, out of the Pleasantly Perfect  mare Lovefromafar, is twice stakes placed with an overall mark of 14-4-4-2.  Owned in-part by Steve Taub, Hotitude, who has earnings of $221,252, seeks her first stakes win.

Owned and bred by John Barr’s Oakcrest Stable, trainer Sean McCarthy’s Cassie Belle comes off a big second, beaten a head, in a one mile turf allowance versus open company Jan 23, a race in which she earned a career-best 81 Beyer Speed figure.  Although the Spring Fever will be her first start on dirt  since Nov. 23, 2018, she rates a big look with Tyler Baze up.  A 5-year-old mare by Lucky Pulpit out of Barr’s Unusual Heat mare Madame Heat, Cassie Belle tries stakes company for the first time in what will be her 16th career start.
