TWILIGHT DERBY: CATHAL MAKES STAKES DEBUT FOR SADLER IN GRADE II
Among the principals in Saturday’s feature at Santa Anita, the Grade II, $200,000 Twilight Derby at 1 1/8 miles on turf, is Cathal for trainer John Sadler.
Imported this winter from his native Ireland, where he raced twice, Cathal has shown steady improvement in four U.S. starts this year. Most recently, the No Nay Never colt appeared to put it all together when drawing off to win a 1 1/16-mile allowance at Del Mar Sept. 1.
“He won really impressively the other day,” Sadler said Friday morning.
Cathal now makes his stakes debut in what is a competitive edition of the Twilight Derby. In a field of seven, there are four stakes winners and two others who are Grade III-placed. The 3-1 program favorite, Stay Hot, is a Grade III winner seeking his fifth stakes victory for trainer Peter Eurton.
“He has been the tough one in this division all year,” Sadler said of Stay Hot.
Eurton was in Kentucky Friday and not immediately available for comment.
In the Twilight Derby, Cathal will go a sixteenth of a mile farther than in his allowance win. Sadler said “that should help him.
“He looks like he’s still going forward. We’re excited about tomorrow,” he added.
Cathal will be ridden for the first time by Santa Anita leading rider Juan Hernandez. Hector Berrios, who was aboard for his allowance win, will ride 7-2 second choice Atitlan for trainer John Shirreffs. On Sept. 1, Atitlan and Berrios teamed to finish third in the GII Del Mar Derby behind winner Formidable Man and runner-up Stay Hot.
The Twilight Derby goes as the seventh race on a 10-race card Saturday. Post time is set for 4:04 p.m. PT. The field in post position order: Atitlan, Hector Berrios (7-2); Curlin’s Kaos, Diego Herrera (5-1); Wynstock, Kyle Frey (6-1); Stay Hot, Antonio Fresu (3-1); Cathal, Juan Hernandez (5-1); Rothschild, Kazushi Kimura (9-2); Twirling Point, Umberto Rispoli (6-1).
In Saturday’s sixth race, Sadler will run For All Mankind in a dirt allowance going 1 1/16 miles after a sixth-place finish in the GII Santa Anita Sprint Championship Sept. 29. By Into Mischief, For All Mankind has never raced around two turns on dirt. In the Santa Anita Sprint, For All Mankind flashed early speed before quickly fading. The winner that day, Straight No Chaser, figures to be among the favorites in next Saturday’s Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Del Mar.
“We’re anxious to try him around two turns on dirt,” Sadler said. “We believe the stake was just too tough. Straight No Chaser looked like the best horse in the country.”
For All Mankind is installed as the 3-1 second choice on the morning line. The 6-5 favorite is Ultra Power, who exits a dominant seven-length allowance win going a mile at Del Mar Aug. 31. The 3-year-old Curlin colt is trained by Bob Baffert. Also in the field for Baffert is Imagination (9-2), winner of the GII San Felipe in March at Santa Anita. The Into Mischief colt most recently was third in the Shared Belief Stakes at Del Mar Sept. 1.
