As the recent tragedies at Santa Anita have illustrated, Thoroughbred horse racing in the United States is at a crossroads. The Stronach Group is fully committed to modernizing our sport in a way that prioritizes the welfare and safety of horses and riders above all. The fact that horses running in America are five times more likely to suffer a catastrophic injury than horses running at international venues is unacceptable and must immediately change.
We are proud to be working in collaboration with the California Horse Racing Board (CHRB) and other industry partners on key reforms unseen in our sport for decades. These critical reforms move us closer in line with the International Federation of Horse Racing Authorities (IFHA), the world’s benchmark for equine safety and welfare. As a result of these reforms, horses that race at Santa Anita do so under the strongest medication regulation in the United States. These reforms are the start, not the end.
We will work with anyone and everyone who shares our commitment and respect for prioritizing horses in preserving the legacy of the sport but also those who recognize that we must adapt to ensure the future of this great sport for generations to come.
