• First winner: Swift Doc, March 3, 1984, at Caliente.
• 2,000th career victory: Timber Baron, Oct. 27, 1999, at Oak Tree.
• 3,000th career victory: Time to Get Even, May 20, 2007, at Hollywood Park in Grade III Lazaro Barrera Memorial Stakes.
• Riding titles: Santa Anita: 1999; Del Mar: 1999; Oak Tree: 1999.
• Scored third Breeders’ Cup victory aboard Singletary in 2004 Mile at Lone Star Park to reward mutuel backers at $35. First career BC victory came with Tempera in 2001 Juvenile Fillies at Belmont Park. Added Juvenile to Breeders’ Cup list in 2003 at Santa Anita when victorious aboard Action This Day.
• Breeders’ Cup win with Singletary accounted for tenth victory in a million-dollar race, the first coming with Marquetry in the 1991 Hollywood Gold Cup, a race he also won with Siphon in 1996. Marquetry’s win mutuel of $56.80 was the highest in Gold Cup history.
• Came within one victory of tying a Hollywood Park record on Dec. 17, 2006, when he rode five winners highlighted by score aboard Romance Is Diane in Grade I, $459,250 Hollywood Starlet.
• Won four graded stakes aboard 4-year-old filly Citronnade in 2007: the Grade I Gamely at Hollywood Park as well as the Grade II Beverly Hills Handicap after capturing a pair of Grade II events at Santa Anita, the San Gorgonio and Santa Ana Handicaps.
• Siphon provided first Santa Anita Handicap win in 1997 as trainer Richard Mandella achieved an unprecedented sweep in Santa Anita’s signature event with stablemates Sandpit and Gentlemen second and third, respectively. Proceeded to ride Siphon to second-place finish behind Singspiel in Dubai World Cup. Good fortune in 1997 included win in Hollywood Park’s Sunset Handicap with pick-up mount Marlin after Chris McCarron was sidelined earlier in the day.
• Banner year in 1999 when captured seven Grade I events including six on runners trained by Bob Baffert. Among them was his first Pacific Classic aboard General Challenge on Aug. 29, 1999, when completed the day by piloting Chilukki to a one-length triumph in the GI Del Mar Debutante. Mounts earned a career-high $11.9 million in 1999 when 208 victories were most among Southern California-based jockeys and included 17 graded stakes.
• Earnings of $8.5 million in 1991 did not reflect victories in the $2-million UAE Derby in Dubai on Express Tour and the $1-million Godolphin Mile atop Festival of Light.
• On Sept. 20, 1992, became first rider in 54-year history of the Los Angeles County Fair to win six races on single program.
• Won sixth consecutive riding title at Fairplex in October, 1994.
• Won 1991 Fairplex meet with record 48 victories, including seven added-money events. Paco Mena set former mark of 38 in 1981.
• Set record in 1990 with 36 wins during Orange County Fair, including four on opening day. His total broke mark of 30 set in 1988 by Corey Black.
• Won six races on June 4, 1989, at Caliente. Set an apprentice record at Caliente in 1984 with 61 wins.

Personal

• Joined Southern California jockey colony in July of 1989 at Del Mar after having begun career at Caliente racetrack in Tijuana.
• His late father, David, rode at Caliente and spent several years as an exercise rider in Southern California. Young David grew up around horses at the track and began riding in 1984.
• Suffered a cracked vertebrae and separated right shoulder in Aug. 1, 1997 spill, costing him the mount on Siphon in the Pacific Classic. A dislocated elbow sustained in a three-horse spill on Feb. 26, 2005 cost him six weeks during Santa Anita meet.
• His diet leading up to the 1991 Hollywood Gold Cup consisted mostly of Cheerios as he was able to make 110 pounds in upsetting high-weighted favorite Farma Way, who carried 122.
