SPRING FEVER HANDICAP QUOTES – MONDAY JULY 4, 2016

JOCKEY QUOTES

FERNANDO PEREZ, LOST BUS, WINNER: “Desormeaux (aboard Codacious) closed off the hole that was right in front of me. I was letting Sunday Rules go and then when I tried to go up on her outside, to sit just off of her, Desormeaux closed off the hole and I was about to be sandwiched, so I had to take up.

“I just took back and tried to make a run at the end. She ran huge. These are really good fillies so I didn’t know exactly what would happen today but (Lost Bus) ran a big race.”

EDWIN MALDONADO, SUNDAY RULES, FOURTH: “I didn’t expect that in a million years, I don’t know what Kent (Desormeaux, aboard Codacious) was thinking. He killed both of us; we both ran last. He finished third, I finished fourth.”

TRAINER QUOTES

GARY SHERLOCK, LOST BUS, WINNER: “The five (Codacious) went with the two (Sunday Rules) and softened her up and it may have made a difference. When I saw my filly make her move, I felt pretty good. She made the lead pretty early. She ran good.

“She’ll probably run in the Rancho Bernardo (Handicap) next (Grade III, $100,000, 6 ½ furlongs at Del Mar Aug. 17).”

OWNER TERRY LOVINGIER, LOST BUS, WINNER: “This filly has a nice stature; she’s a big filly. When she checked early like she did, I thought, ‘I don’t think she’ll be able to make up that much ground.’

“When Codacious went with Sunday Rules and pressured her, I think it took a little bit out of (Sunday Rules) and we were able to get there after that.

“Lost Bus has a bit of a nasty temperament. I took a few people to see her and I was showing them to move slow when you get up close. She acted all nice to me and when I got up close, she head-butted me! I fell to the ground.

“But it can’t get any better than this, winning a race on the Fourth of July.”

NOTES: Winning owner Terry Lovingier resides in Seal Beach.
