MIKE SMITH, KENTUCKIAN, WINNER: “He reminds me of Holy Bull. He has an unbelievably high cruising speed and stride.
“He jumps a long ways and he was really running and they were still two or three in front of me so I was thinking ‘how fast are we going?!’ I knew we were going quick, but after a quarter mile he just took a deep breath and got into a fluid stride. I thought ‘there you are, now we’re OK.’ In the beginning he was scrambling and was kind of tight and when they do that, they don’t always breathe right. I just kept waiting for him, waiting for him… and then I felt really confident.
“The last furlong I pulled my stick up just because I heard Trevor saying someone was coming but, when I looked on the big screen, I put it back down.”
JERRY HOLLENDORFER, KENTUCKIAN, WINNER: “He drew real well in this race and we were hoping to have a clear run at the speed today, which there was a lot of. It’s nice to have an owner like Rick (Porter, of Fox Hill Farms, Inc.), who lets you do the things you need to do. He had a small foot problem down here so we decided to take him to Golden Gate. He was training well up there and Rick told me, ‘Let’s go ahead and run him there.’ He wasn’t concerned about the smaller purse because he knows we’re trying to develop the horse. In order to do well you have to have a horse that can run and you have to have owners that let you do your thing.
WHAT MIGHT BE NEXT? “If we do decide to go two turns, we’re looking at the mile and a sixteenth race here on June 7 (Grade III, $100,000 Affirmed Stakes).”
NOTES: The winning owner is Rick Porter who races as Fox Hill Farms, Inc. Rick Porter lives in Lexington, KY.
