KENT DESORMEAUX, CALIFORNIA DIAMOND, WINNER: “That was his best effort yet. Today was my favorite. This horse has been kind of quirky, but Peter has done an impressive job with him. He has been progressively getting better. This is a 21 and 44 horse, but he is calming down now. Peter is training him to go longer, so we’ll see what’s next.”
PETER MILLER, CALIFORNIA DIAMOND, WINNER: “He got a great trip and a great ride from Kent (Desormeaux). There’s a reason he’s in the Hall of Fame, but they don’t make it easy for you here, even at 2-5. I think the horse will go longer, but we’ll enjoy this and see what happens down the road.”
On the importance of winning the training title (he’s now two up on O’Neill): “It is. We work hard. There’s no extra money (for winning it), it’s just a trophy and bragging rights, but you know what? A trophy and bragging rights are nice. I’m a competitive guy. I’d like to win the title at Tidily Winks. Doug’s hot right now, he’s on my tail. I needed this win and I’m probably going to need another win or two.”
GARY HARTUNIAN, ROCKINGHAM RANCH, WINNING OWNER: “He’s had seven races and five wins. I’m gonna go pick up my check right now. We’ve got Kent and he’s very confident in this horse. Today was his best day.”
NOTES: Winning owner Gary Hartunian resides in Ventura.
