GARY STEVENS, PONTCHATRAIN, WINNER: “I was hoping we would get the trip we did. Tom has done such a good job preparing this filly for this race.
“With a filly like her, you can get a perfect trip. She has good gate speed. Those races down the hill, for fillies that are tough to handle, it changes their whole mind set. She relaxed for me and we just brought it home. I think if she keeps relaxing for me we can go even further with her. Even if she doesn’t relax, she’s a great miler. She’s a super filly.”
MARTIN GARCIA, EGG DROP, SECOND: “We got beat by a really good horse. My filly was running easy, but I could see when the winner came to us that she was full of run. My filly tried to fight back. We just got beat by a better horse today.”
JOHN VELAZQUEZ, TAPICAT, THIRD: “It feels great to be here, great to be back and I wish we would have won but she ran very well. Any time you get the opportunity to come out here with a nice horse it’s an easy decision. I thought she fit really well in here and I knew I wanted to ride her. When the races fit you have to take the chance and hope it works out. ”
TOM PROCTOR, PONTCHATRAIN, WINNER: “I just told Gary to ride her and be comfortable, and it looked like he was in a very comfortable spot . . . Egg Drop was coming off a hard race. We might have caught her not at her best.”
Asked what race might be next: “Life’s very short. You don’t plan ahead.”
CRAIG BERNICK, PRESIDENT OF GLEN HILL FARM AND GRANDSON OF OWNER LEONARD LAVIN, PONTCHATRAIN: “She had a good trip. We thought she was a miler, even though she’s won going 6 ½ going down the hill. She’s a very nice horse and we’re excited to have her.”
MIKE MITCHELL, EGG DROP, SECOND: “We got beat.”
RODOLPHE BRISSET, ASSISTANT FOR BILL MOTT, TAPICAT, THIRD: “It was an easy decision to come out here. There was not much for her on the east coast (right now) and the traveling is easy for her. It was a good spot for her and she ran a good race today.”
NOTES: The winning owner is Leonard Lavin of Ocala, FL, who races as Glen Hill Farm.
