AWESOME AGAIN STAKES QUOTES – SATURDAY SEPT. 30, 2017

JOCKEY QUOTES

DRAYDEN VAN DYKE, MUBTAAHIJ, WINNER: “The trip was great. I was really keeping my eye on Cupid and taking my cue from him. I was placed where I wanted to be and didn’t start asking him until late. But when I asked him, he responded.”

TYLER BAZE, MIDNIGHT STORM, SECOND:  “I thought he was going to win the race. He gave me everything he had today. He felt the pressure the entire race and kept giving me more. He put away a lot of good horses today.”

JOSEPH TALAMO, WIN THE SPACE, THIRD: “Actually turning for home I thought I was going to win there for a second. We had a really good trip and I just kind of let the speed go and settled back in there pretty well. Like I said, turning for home he gave me a heck of a little spurt there. Hats off to the winner. He ran a great race but I was real proud of my horse.”

TRAINER QUOTES

BOB BAFFERT, MUTAAHIJ, WINNER: “I think the blinkers kept (Mutaahij) more focused today. I didn’t want to change too much though. He’s a classy horse.

“I thought Cupid would be on the lead, or close to it. I’m surprised he flattened out at the end. This horse, his last two works really impressed us. I just threw him in here and he has the class. He’s proven. Eve last year, those last few races in New York were pretty strong. He needed today. He got a little tired there at the end. He’s good to have in the barn.

“Somebody told me his name means “cheery” I believe.

“I’m disappointed in Cupid. I thought I’d run one, two in here.

“I was getting ready to use Drayden at the beginning of the year but then he broke his arm. I was watching him. He came up through Tom Proctor and he taught him well. He taught him how to be patient, how to be a horseman. He like the horses, he gets along with them. I was waiting for him and now, I have no problem putting him on a good horse. He’s pretty smart, does his homework. I like students of the game and Mike Smith has taught him a lot. He listens, he’s a good kid and he’s been working a lot of my horses. If you work them, we’ll throw you a bone. That’s the way it works here; just have to wait on the bone. He got one with a little filet on it today.

“Well it looks like he’ll be in the Breeders’ Cup Classic. They’re all in. They’re all being pointed for it, unless they’re not training well or something. I just need to figure out how to make up 10 lengths on Bolt d’Oro (laughing), I think I can get five. Solomini is a nice horse and he’s learning how to run. I knew I was in with two monster 2-year-olds but I’m just glad I picked up one Grade I today, so it’s good.

“As long as they’re healthy, I’ll go to the Breeders’ Cup. I don’t want to jinx myself. I don’t want to get too ahead of myself and it’s a nice problem but like I said, they have to be training well and they’ve got to stay healthy.”
