Horse Racing Tips from a Top Race Handicapper

Handicapping, in short, refers to analyzing the race to come up with best predicted outcome, or pick. There are many angles when it comes to picking a winner. Using some of the help from the professional handicappers below, you can determine your own angle on placing a bet. For more information on how to bet or wager, click here.

The early part of this Thursday program has the potential to be fairly chalky but there are some decent middle priced chances in the Pick-6 and in the late Pick-4.

In the opener, #4 Coluda moves up a notch following a Mitchell claim (superb 31% with a flat bet profit with first-off-claim plays). The Pure Prize gelding has won over this track in the past and his front-running style is complimented by the track profile (very kind toward speed so far this meeting). We’ll make him a rolling exotic single, though at 8/5 on the morning line he offers little in the way of value.

#1 Quietasacat ran very well in his debut last month at Del Mar and Gaines has an outstanding record with second time starters, so we’ll assume this son of Elusive Quality will move forward in today’s opener. The rail shouldn’t be an issue and neither should this extended sprint distance. # 6Super Ninety Nine was entered in a sprint stakes as a first time starter yesterday but opts for this more realistic spot. Clearly he’s highly regarded by Baffert and should come out firing. Preference goes to Quietasacat but both should be used in your rolling exotics.

A Pick-6 carryover of $36,436 enhances an outstanding Saturday program with three key Breeders’ Cup prep races highlighting the 10 race agenda.

#5 So Brilliant launches a comeback in the opener for Baffert and if he returns as well as he left he can handle this field. Unbeaten in two starts including a win in the Hollywood Prevue Stakes as a 2-year-old, the son of Medaglia d’Oro has trained like he’s fit and ready for a barn that wins with a remarkable 38% of its layoff starters while achieving a flat-bet profit.

Today’s opener is a bottom-rung claiming sprint for fillies and mares that might be best left alone, but if you’re playing rolling exotics you should consider going at least three deep. #1 My Diane drops to the bottom – her lowest level ever – and on that angle alone warrants consideration. Her only lifetime win came over this track last January, another positive factor. #3 Memo to Kathy also has a win over the local main track and could fire fresh after being stopped on in July. The barn is very strong with comebackers and this filly has won off similar layoffs in the past.
