Sunday’s opener is an unplayable five-horse maiden race that finds #5 Nicole H, a good second in her debut, listed at even money on the morning line. She goes from inside to outside for a trainer who is excellent with second time starters and should enjoy a very easy front running trip. No value, so we’ll pass.
A strong Friday program begins rather meekly with a five horse expensive maiden claimer for 3-year-ods. #2 Cape Finisterre is the 8/5 morning line choice after finishing an okay fourth in a very fast, highly-rated straight maiden dash, and he seems sure to improve with the class drop and the race under his belt. But #4 Drink At Last Call owns essentially the same pattern and he’s 9/5 on the morning line. Take your pick, we’ll pass.
Yesterday’s program illustrated how a track bias can influence the outcome of a race. The track was noticeably favoring the outside lanes and the closers, so when analyzing form from yesterday you should remember to forgive the fading front-runners and downgrade the rally-widers. How will the track play today? Who knows? This is why you should to go to school during the first couple of races to see if the bias remains intact.
Week three of the winter/spring Santa Anita season opens with a $50,000 claiming sprint for newly-turned 3-year-old fillies and #5 Yankee Romance seems very much the controlling speed. The daughter of Yankee Gentlemen had little behind her when graduating under wraps at Hollywood Park vs. the boys last month and likely will face a tad more pace pressure today. However, she’s a nice moving filly with a good work since ran, and with Rosario back aboard she figures to be a short price to score again.
