Jeff Siegel's Prime Picks for Friday, March 13
A nice Pick-6 carryover in excess of $81,000 to aim for on this Friday the 13th and the card looks playable. We’ll kick things off in the 3rd race with a single, #5 Natural Touch. The veteran gelding makes his first start since being claimed by Peter Miller and drops to the bottom after sitting out his jail term. He switches to Baze, adds blinkers and should be along in time at 3-1 on the morning line. We’ll single the 4th race as well, hoping that #7 Threat can make amends for her failure as the favorite in each of her last two starts. Solis should have her on or near the lead throughout in this $25,000 claimer restricted to 4-year-olds. The 5th race, a nine furlong maiden affair on turf, boils down to #1 Meteore and #3 Anastasios. Meteore seems to be coming around now for Mandella and should appreciate the extra furlong. He’ll be storming home. Anastasios exits the best race and with another forward move in just his third career start the Hendricks-trained colt should be dangerous. The 6th race is a tough and contentious claiming sprint and the three main contenders are #3 All Man; #5 Pocosin’s Game Boy; and #6 Aggie Engineer. The Julio Canani-trained All Man bids for his fourth straight win while moving up a notch and obviously must be included in all rolling exotic tickets. Pocosin’s Game Boy seems most effective if held up early and allowed to run late and given that kind of ride today he should be able to out run his 10-1 morning line odds. Aggie Engineer is a solid threat on speed figures, exits a very tough race for the level and sports a bullet work since raced. The Moscow Burning Stakes, which goes as the 7th on the program, would seem to be tailor made for #5 Charming Legacy, who has two good recent races over the course and figures to fire another big shot. However, the likely favorite is the Bobby Frankel-trained newcomer from Europe, #7 Modern Look, who has trained like she’s fit and ready to win first crack out of the box. We’ll use them both, but ‘Look could be a rolling exotic single on smaller tickets. The 8th race is an open maiden claimer and two that you should use are #7 Big Wave Rider and #9 Stray Cat. Big Wave Rider is a first timer from the Mitchell barn with good enough works to make him a very live item in a soft field. Stray Cat figures to be running on strongly and is clearly the best of the known element.
