Jeff Siegel's Kentucky Derby Top-10 (March 10)

1. Dunkirk 2. Pioneerof the Nile 3. Old Fashioned 4. The Pamplemousse 5. Quality Road 6. I Want Revenge 7. Friesan Fire 8. Desert Party 9. Theregoesjojo 10. Patena Dunkirk will have jockey Garrett Gomez aboard when he makes his next start in the Florida Derby on the last Saturday of March. Gomez and his agent, Ron Anderson, will have the opportunity to gauge this colt’s performance against that of 2nd rated Pioneerof the Nile, who will be a short priced favorite when he returns to action this Saturday in the San Felipe Stakes. Gomez is scheduled to ride Bob Baffert’s colt back in the Santa Anita Derby, after which he can choose a side. That’s a pretty good position to be. Old Fashioned reappears in the Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn Park on Saturday. We have no doubts about his class; only his ability to get 10 furlongs. The Pamplemousse came out of his Sham Stakes victory in peak shape and is training aggressively for his next start in the Santa Anita Derby on the first Saturday in April. Quality Road, who has never been around two turns but was as impressive as you can be in winning the one-turn mile Fountain of Youth Stakes, will remain in Florida and figures to severely test Dunkirk in the Florida Derby March 28. I Want Revenge earned a huge Beyer figure (113) when he ventured east to take the Gotham Stakes but he could not have enjoyed a softer trip, pressing a slow pace 1-off the rail and then kicking clear in a field without any effective closers. Let’s see how he reacts to any potential adversity in his next start, the Wood Memorial April 4. Friesan Fire will be the favorite in this Saturday’s Louisiana Derby while Dubai-based Desert Party will have his final Kentucky Derby prep in the UAE Derby on World Cup night March 28. Theregoesjojo was looking for more distance when runner-up in the highly-rated Fountain of Youth Stakes and is another pointing for what should be an epic renewal of the Florida Derby. Patena makes his first start for the Big Brown boys in the Louisiana Derby and could give Friesan Fire a real run for his money.
