Jeff Siegel's Prime Picks for Thursday, March 5

We’ll start our action in the 4th race, a one mile maiden affair on turf for California-bred 3-year-olds, and the two that should benefit most from the conditions are #3 Thorondor and #8 Jacob’s Little Bro. The former is bred for turf on both sides of his pedigree and exits by far the best race. He faces restricted company today and seems the one to beat. Jacob’s Little Bro must overcome the outside post (not really the place to be when the rail is up 30 feet) but with Lear Fan on the bottom of his pedigree he should enjoy the lawn and the added distance. His numbers are rising and Talamo stays aboard. We’ll use two in the 5th race, #4 Dotsy Jean and #5 Blame the Wine. Dotsy Jean, first off the claim for Marty Jones, is a route to sprint play and a shipper from the Bay Area who should be ideally suited by this extended sprint distance. She gets Rosario and represents good value at 6-1 on the morning line. Blame the Wine has the right style for this trip and looks very dangerous with a one level class drop while retaining Bejarano. The 6th race is a first level allowance sprint for 3-year-old fillies but it’ll take a stakes quality runner to win it. #4 Gabby’s Golden Gal was impressive breaking her maiden in good style for Baffert and should be dangerous right back, while #5 Music Magic had a right to need her recent comeback when second at 6/5 in a strong affair and should move forward considerably today with Gomez staying aboard for Gallagher. In the 7th race, #1 My Maloof Rocker gets a chance to make amends for two recent defeats as the favorite. She switches to Rosario, lands the good rail and will be the one to beat if given the patient ride she prefers. #2 North Rodeo has run well two-turning in the past and if she can make the running without undue pressure she’ll take them a long way. The 8th race is a bottom rung claiming dash and #3 Flip the Penny; #6 Satellite, and #8 Magnificent Blend all have a right to run well. Flip the Penny won under similar conditions two races back; Satellite has taken three of his last six and is always dangerous from off the pace; and Magnificent Blend is a win machine from up north who is worth using in the your exotics despite the raise in class and his low profile connections. Today's ShowVivor selection is #5 Music Magic in the 6th race.
