Jeff Siegel's Kentucky Derby Top-10 (March 3)

1. Dunkirk 2. Pioneerof the Nile 3. Old Fashioned 4. The Pamplemousse 5. Quality Road 6. Friesan Fire 7. Desert Party 8. Theregoesjojo 9. Stardom Bound 10. Patena Dunkirk maintains the top spot as he awaits the Florida Derby on the last Saturday of March. Pioneerof the Nile will be a short priced favorite when he returns to action a week from Saturday in the San Felipe Stakes. Old Fashioned should reappear in the Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn Park. The Pamplemousse figures to encounter much more pace pressure than he saw in his Sham Stakes victory when he has his final Kentucky Derby prep in the Santa Anita Derby on the first Saturday in April. Quality Road, who has never been around two turns but blew away a top class field in the one turn mile Fountain of Youth Stakes last week, could hook up with Dunkirk in the Florida Derby or make his next start in the Wood Memorial at the Big A just three weeks before the Run for the Roses. Friesan Fire will be the favorite in the Louisiana Derby a week from Saturday while Dubai-based Desert Party should be the one to beat in the UAE Derby on the World Cup night March 28. Theregoesjojo lost little in defeat when runner-up in the highly-rated Fountain of Youth Stakes and there’s no reason to think he won’t run on. Stardom Bound will be odds-on in the Santa Anita Oaks this weekend, after which her connections must decide to take on the boys in the Santa Anita Derby or take a path of lesser resistance prior to determining whether she’ll shoot for the Oaks or Derby at Churchill Downs. Patena makes his first start for the Big Brown boys in the Louisiana Derby and could give Friesan Fire a real run for his money.
