SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO HANDICAP QUOTES

JOCKEY QUOTES

JOE TALAMO, INTERACTION, WINNER: “We had a perfect trip. The whole way around I was able to save a lot of ground. Turning for home I took him out and he gave me a huge effort the last eighth of a mile. The horse that ran second (All Squared Away), you can’t take anything away from him, he was pretty hard to get by. My horse just showed a lot of heart and effort, he showed a lot of class today.”

EDWIN MALDONADO, ALL SQUARED AWAY, SECOND: “I couldn’t have asked for a better trip; it was beautiful. I hit the lead a little too soon and my horse kind of played around in the lane and it cost us the race. He can handle the distance, he ran a huge race at 1 ½ (miles) last out (San Luis Rey), so he ran good, but we just took the lead too soon.”

MARTIN GARCIA, SKY KINGDOM, SIXTH: “I don’t think the distance was a problem at all, but that grass is pretty hard for him and he didn’t like that at all. When I asked him to go, he just stayed the same, he never responded.”

TRAINER QUOTES

RON McANALLY, INTERACTION, WINNER: “It was a slow pace but he’s still got that kick the last part of it. I think the turf last time was a little bit hard for him . . . Joe (Talamo) rode a terrific race, saved a lot of ground on the rail and managed to get through.

“We only got 11 more to go to catch him (Charlie Whittingham, who won the San Juan 14 times; McAnally won it with John Henry in 1980 and Amerique in1998). We don’t have that much of a chance with me being 80, but we’re still here.

“That was the way we had planned it (to be well back early) no matter what the pace was. He stayed back on a slow pace and he’s got that good kick at the end . . . to win here at Santa Anita is very special.”

NOTES: This is the 701st Santa Anita win for McAnally. He won No. 700 at Santa Anita when Suggestive Boy took the Grade I Frank E. Kilroe Mile on March 2.

The winning owner is Jose Cerillo of Lomas de Chapultepec, Mexico, who races as Pozo de Luna, Inc.
