ECHO EDDIE STAKES QUOTES

JOCKEY QUOTES

MARTIN GARCIA, DERBY GOLD, WINNER: “This was his second time out. The first time he raced he wore blinkers and he didn’t know what was going on. He was waiting for company last race and the winner just flew right by him. He’s been learning a lot, and today he relaxed well. Just look at what he showed today. He’s a really good horse.”

GARRETT GOMEZ, THE BLACK, SECOND: “He was a little more aggressive than I thought he would be. So it felt like we were going a little slower than we were. I had myself in a decent position, I just thought I’d be a little farther back, but he still came with a decent run. The winner was in front of me the whole way – if I could draw it up on paper, that’s kind of where I wanted to be. We were just second-best today. I just couldn’t run him down today.”

MARTIN PEDROZA, REAL CONUNDRUM, THIRD: “I’m feeling really good. Yesterday I felt a little rusty. Today I feel pretty good, back to normal. The horses ran well in both stakes races. This one (Real Conundrum) ran huge. I was hoping I’d have a better push but you have to go with what you got.”

TRAINER QUOTES

JIMMY BARNES (ASSISTANT TO BOB BAFFERT), DERBY GOLD, WINNER: “I knew we had a good horse. He just got beat his first time out, and if he had won, we would have been here anyways. We drew good, the outside post with a lot of speed to the inside. We broke well, and Martin let him settle, and we finished strong, so I’m very happy. This saves the day.”

(On the condition of Bob Baffert)
“Bob’s fine, doing well. He said he’s going to try to travel on Tuesday. As far as I can tell by talking to him, he seems 100 percent. Maybe he’s getting a little tired in the afternoons, I don’t know, but he’s ready to get out of there and come home.”

ARNOLD ZETCHER, WINNING OWNER, DERBY GOLD: “This is pretty good, to win this race with such a big purse, although the last time he ran, it was almost like a win (finishing second by a neck as the 4-5 favorite in his debut on March 8), but it wasn’t. This is fabulous.”

NOTES: The winning owner is Arnold Zetcher of Los Angeles.
